Alabama's Democratic superdelegates still mostly undecided

BOB JOHNSON

Associated Press

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama's seven superdelegates to the Democratic National Convention are still mostly uncommitted, but are leaning more toward front-runner John Kerry than they were several months ago.

One of Alabama's superdelegates, state Democratic Party Chairman Redding Pitt, has committed to vote for Kerry at the convention and another says she is leaning toward the Massachusetts senator. The other superdelegates remain uncommitted, but two say they could support either Kerry or U.S. Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C.

Alabama Democratic Conference chairman Joe Reed said he is impressed with both Kerry and Edwards, now that most of the other candidates have dropped from the race. Reed said he would like to see them run together for president and vice president on the same ticket.

"I think they both have made a good impression. They are both bringing out the issues," Reed said. He said he would not commit to a candidate until the ADC makes an endorsement. Reed was also undecided in a survey of the state's superdelegates in December.
