I am breaking my 3 month vow of silence because my veteran brother told me to. (Well ok, it wasn't entirely because of him, but he got me thinking) 3 months ago I became overcome with current events to the point of severe depression, so I stopped posting. I still tuned in to my local progressive radio almost daily, but I stopped posting and reading the blogosphere out of desperation for our great nation. Dennis Kucinich had introduced legislation to impeach Dick Cheney, and it went no where. I wrote to my representative, and my senators, urging them to support DK and urging them to take a stronger stands against the rampant abuses of power of the Bush administration. I will continue to urge them to end this illegal and immoral war, and now I will urge them to support investigations into all wrongdoings by the executive branch.
I stumbled back into DU after an email from my veteran brother, whom I debate with on and off. He told me to get active and get out and vote. So Mike, this is for you! But I am also inspired by my fellow DUer's of course, whose eloquence with prose and whose knowledge of the issues is greater than mine. I only have but a few hours a week to spare, but the primary season is heating up, and as the stories multiply, it is hard not to tune out. The birds are beginning to sing I hear, and I just missed making a solstic greeting, for I hardly knew where to start.
So thank you Mythsage, for your great post a couple days ago. And thank you Madfloridian, for your always spot on analysis, and thank you jgraz, for poining out the faults of Hillary Clinton. And thank you Skinner, and Marmar, and Deepmodem Mom, and kpete, and babylonsister, and flamingyouth and uppityperson. Everyone at DU, you may not think you are making a difference, maybe you think you are wasting your time and not making a change, but you are. Maybe all of our protests, and marches and vigils have not ousted the corporatists from power, maybe all of our posts on online forums have not created mass protests to change congress or restore Al Gore, maybe all of our efforts to educate ourselves did not prevent the media ownership rule change, but not all of these efforts have been in vain. We must work to restore Americas moral standing in the world. We must work long and hard to change the discourse in this country. America in particular must change in many many fundamental ways, and many will resist that change. We must fight global warming for the sake of the planet, and Big Oil and other interests will fight us every step of the way. We must fight the corporate media to get the message out to those who don't have time, like my brother. The corporate media is not the friend of the middle class or the working poor, and they will work hard to keep us down. They want us to work 50-60+ hours a week. That is why I stay tuned to Air America. That is why we, all of us, must not stop educating ourselves constantly about what is happening. So thank you DU, merry christmas and happy kwanzaa and and happy new year and merry solstice and all that, to everyone! As Robert Kennedy Jr said, I will see you on the barricades!
