Snowblind in Iowa ...

Snowblind in Iowa
by James Oliphant

DES MOINES, Iowa--"You know the weather isn't good when the airport crews begin plowing the runway right after your plane has landed.

That's Iowa this afternoon as a winter storm swept fin rom the plains, with winds gusts and blowing snow. Forecasts have as much as eight inches falling before tomorrow morning.

For the candidates here, this couldn't be worse timing. The campaign calendar is already compressed thanks to the Christmas holiday. Satiurday was going to be a full day for several, their last before taking a break.

But John Edwards and Fred Thompson, to name two, have already cancelled avents today. Sen. Barack Obama is still scheduled to have one tonight in Des Moines, but can you call it an event if no one can show up?

Sen. Hillary Clinton spent today in New Hampshire, campaigning with her mother and daughter, but plans to return to Iowa tomorrow for a last day before the break. It's a day that the candidate could use considering her tight race with Obama and Edwards here. The question is whether the snow has other plans. Has Rudolph affiliated himself with a campaign yet?

1. I remember sitting in the bar at the old Denver airport
watching the crews de-icing the plane we were suppossed to fly home on. The snow was falling heavily. The more times they de-iced the plane, the more I drank. By the time the plane took off, six hours late, I was crocked.

2. And our citizens.
Meeting a candidate isn't worth getting stuck in a snowdrift.

3. It was just doing these enormous, weird ice/snowflakes.
I'm glad we don't have to go anywhere.
