During what must've been a strenuous day of campaigning in Iowa, GOP candidate Fred Thompson told potential voters at his one-and-only appearance that immigrants deserve some of the blame for the mortgage crisis.

"A lot of them couldn't communicate with the people they were getting the mortgage from," the lagging Republican told an Iowa audience during his "Clear Conservative Choice bus tour," according to the Los Angeles Times.

Thompson's stop in Mason City, Iowa, allowed him to play on Republicans' fears of immigrants and riff on apparent frustration with hearing options in Spanish on recorded phone messages. Janice Easley, one voter in the audience, was boiling with frustration at having to hear, "Para el español, prensa dos," whenever she called the power company. "Everything is in Spanish," she said. "It's sickening."

"You are so, so right," Thompson said, calling for English to be made the national language, before placing the blame for the sub-prime mortgage crisis on non-English-speakers.

what does the Romance standard of Spanish have to do with anything? Latin-derived languages are no "better" or "worse" than any other languages.

When I was in the Army in Germany, I was talking to a Bulgarian in Munich who had been a prisoner of war and unfamiliar with other cultures. He said that when he heard someone speaking German or English it sounded to him like dogs barking, but French or Italian seemed like music to him.

the sad thing is that his base will eat this shit up. Heck, I was talking to another artist last week who blamed the poor economy on "all the illegals coming over here and taking our jobs". He added 'Canada is just America's hat, and Mexico isn't even a country because it's practically empty; they're all up here now". if you are here illegally you are here illegally. I obey the laws of the land and I expect others to do so. Only those that are here illegally through the actions of another (i.e. brought over as a kid) should be given a chance. Those who flout the law should leave. Lawbreakers should be deported immediately, and they should get an instant veto on any future citizenship.

Those who have been here awhile -- and lived decent lives, as have most -- should have a pathway to citizenship (I do question bush's motives).

I have no problem with controlling the borders against entry, but mass deportation is not what this country is about (at least, I hope thats' still the case).

Morlet isn't an immigration agent. He's a real estate agent, and he's scouting for business.

"Do you want a house, work and pay taxes but don't have a Social Security number?" reads his flier, written in Spanish and tailored to his potential customers. "We can help you LEGALLY!"

Across the country, particularly in Texas and parts of the Midwest, hundreds of illegal immigrants have bought homes using special lending programs that bypass the need for a Social Security number. Now, with backing from some of the country's largest financial institutions, this newest effort to tap customers for the real estate market is moving to the nation's largest concentration of illegal immigrants — California.

As buyers begin to queue up, real estate is becoming the latest arena to highlight the often-bizarre contradictions of American immigration policy.
