Edwards' Closing Argument: I'm The True Fighter For Middle Class
By Greg Sargent - December 26, 2007, 1:04PM

In a new internal memo to supporters, Edwards deputy campaign manager Jonathan Prince has laid out the campaign's closing argument in Iowa.

The closing slogan is, "America Rising: Fighting for the Middle Class," and according to the memo, Edwards will spend every day from tomorrow through January 3 at small roundtable gatherings with Iowans, as well as holding a series of "America rising" rallies.

According to the memo -- which was first leaked to The Washington Post a little while ago and has now been obtained by TPM Election Central -- the Edwards campaign is banking on the fact that his bio as the son of a mill-worker will prove more inspirational to working and middle class Iowans and will enable his message to resonate among them. "America Rising is compelling because it relates the challenges and triumphs of Edwards’ own life to those the country faces right now," the memo says.

The memo also likens Hillary's closing argument to George W. Bush's 2004 message and says that Obama's attacks on Edwards are motivated by the latter's movement in the polls.

1. I'm surprised anyone would bother leaking it
It's the sort of thing the campaigns have been sending out, no? It seems to me I've seen a hundred of these internal memos.

2. "Leaking" is cooler than "releasing" --
:eyes:

I am rooting for Edwards so I think it is a good move on Trippi and/or Saunders part.

If it were Hillary's or Obama's campaign "leaking" instead of "releasing" I would think it was evidence that they are worried about their standing in the election and playing a silly trick.

Honesty - it doesn't always make me look good.

4. I have no problem with such "leaks"... using the press is a big and valid part of a good campaign

3. They probably thought that leaking it would provide distance from the
Clinton = Bush41 theme. That would look bad in a formal press release.

But it's a very favorable memo, so I don't doubt it was leaked on purpose.

6. I wish Edwards fought for the middle class on the bankruptcy bill.
That's one pre-conversion stance that really hurt everyone but the rich.

I very much like what Edwards has to say now but, for me, not enough time has elapsed to forget what he said and did before.

7. The amount of time that has elapsed doesn't seem to me to be a valid
indicator of whether someone's changed stance is sincere and will be long-lasting. I am not sure what is, but I don't think time elapsed is necessary or sufficient.

Just a thought.

8. time dulls the acuity of these things for some
Unfortunately those "things" (IWR, bankruptcy, free trade with China, etc.) still resonate large for me. That's part of why I'm anxious to "roll the dice" on the new kid.

10. Challenges in life? Try having your father leave, and you end up
living in a car.

If I had a dollar for every time Edwards mentioned that his daddy worked in a mill, I'd have almost as much money as Edwards himself.

11. Middle class? What happened to the poor?
I had heard that Edwards was abandoning his talk of poverty in favor of Clintonesque talk of the Middle Class and this seems to confirm it.
I guess when it comes down to crunch time, he really needs the votes.

12. That is the exact point I make as to why I don't "trust" Edwards......
because for him, what he says is more about "how to win" than what he truly believes.

The poor talk worked well to a point.....now the middle class talk will work well to close this deal....with the "we will fight corporation" talk given to excite those for whom neither the poor or the middle class stuff mattered much to. When it comes to the general election "deal", I'm not sure if the "will fight corporation" talk will continue.....and the stuff about the poor most likely has been permanently shelved.

I just don't believe much about any of these Edwards "promises"....cause much of what Edwards professes seem to ring true in a "promise them anything" type of situation.

13. Well I would rather have some
Promise - then triangulation answers, also that we can go back on, and hold him accountable, unlike some? that think just because there are this or that!!!

He is Staking out positions - others wont! (((some wont even dare! IE The insurance Slime balls, will not be invited to the table))) Poor and Middle class is were I,m at, and most other people i know, sounds good to them.

15. not sure
All candidates try to win.

We can never know if what a candidate says now will change later.

What Edwards is promising us is a fight. That isn't really "promising them anything" and would be a pretty strange way to go about pandering to people. He talks about what we can do together again and again, not what he is going to do for us.

If the poor get shelved, I will be the first and the most vocal to criticize Edwards.

The Edwards talk matters very much to the poor and the working poor, and that is who inspired me to support Edwards.

If you don't trust him, you don't, and I can understand and respect that. But not all of us are naively trusting him, or any person, but see it as a positive and constructive thing that the struggles of the poor and the have-nots are being recognized in the national political discussion for the first time in a long time. If he does nothing else, he has already made an enormous contribution.

I trust what he has already done - focused the discussion on the plight of the have-nots. We can build on that, no matter how his campaign turns out. If we get sold out, at least we will know that we were sold out, and over what. That would be a big improvement over what many other Democratic party politicians have done to us. At least we would know where we stood for a change. Meanwhile, it is powerful and inspiring that people are rallying around his words, and the solidarity and enthusiasm that is being generated can carry us forward in positive new directions with or without any one politician.
