OBAMA ATTACKS: Lies about Edwards NAFTA Position
Barack Obama needs some history lesson in American politics-US Senate Elections 1998.

Just saw a tape of a rally in Iowa where Obama claimed Edwards voted for NAFTA lol

Oops...flashback...Edwards got elected to the Senate in 1998--NAFTA was in 1993.

Methinks Obama made a boo boo....

1. Did he say "VOTED FOR"?
Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 04:52 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
I don't know if you were seeing this clip, or another one:

"When I talk about getting troops out of Iraq, I was opposed to the war at the start when it was unpopular to be against the war. John was for it. When I talk about trade, and that we should have environmental agreements in out trade agreements. I didn’t support NAFTA, didn’t vote for permanent trade relations for China, John did."

9. Parsing words is not a good defense.
Obama made a mistake and should either let it slide or clarify his comments. It won't be that big of a deal either way, unless he does try to use a line like that to wriggle out of it because it will make him appear to be too slick.

On the other hand, a small mistake like this doesn't warrant the 47 posts we're about to see trying to nail Obama to the wall, either.

13. I'm not parsing. I don't remember whether Edwards was a NAFTA critic in 2004
Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 04:55 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
(He obviously didn't vote for it.)

I can't stand Obama. But I also cannot stand lies, so I'd like to know if the OP is correct.

25. He was
Link to '04 article

From the article:

" "There is a difference," Edwards said. "There is a choice for Wisconsin voters on this issue. I'm against NAFTA. I was against NAFTA. Gov. Dean and Sen. Kerry were for it."

However, when pressed later, Edwards, who had not been elected to the Senate when NAFTA was passed, conceded that he could not remember when he first started criticizing the trade agreement publicly. In a Democratic senatorial candidate debate in April 1998, Edwards said he had "serious reservations" about NAFTA because it was causing job losses." "

I'm kind of curious about when Obama first expressed opposition to NAFTA.

6. Really? Here's exactly what he said:
"When I talk about getting troops out of Iraq, I was opposed to the war at the start when it was unpopular to be against the war. John was for it. When I talk about trade, and that we should have environmental agreements in out trade agreements. I didn’t support NAFTA, didn’t vote for permanent trade relations for China, John did."

12. Ack, it was a bad sentence,
I think he was just talking about Edwards and the China trade deal, but I can see where it could be taken to mean NAFTA too.

23. Of course Obama didn't vote for those things
because he was not in the US Senate prior to 2005 and did not have a chance to miss those votes.

18. You know I agree
With you on this, but I am really curious as to why a clinton supporter is putting up all of these post in defense of Edwards? Seems you are helping the cause for John Edwards, which is a good thing, but what will it be like if it comes down to Hillary and Edwards? What side will you be on then?

Just curious.

Edwards Condemns NAFTA, Discounts Celebrity Campaigners

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2007/12/08/edwards_condemns_nafta.html

John Edwards at at town hall meeting in Concord Saturday. (AP).

CONCORD, N.H. -- As his main rivals for the Democratic nomination are wielding the big names today -- Oprah Winfrey for Barack Obama and Bill and Chelsea Clinton for Hillary -- John Edwards is trying to make a virtue of his lack of star power. He focused his day on an aggressively un-flashy subject, the 14th anniversary of the passage of NAFTA, condemning the deal as a "particularly clear example of... big corporate powers getting exactly what they want in Washington, at the cost of over a million American jobs and incredible damage to the middle class in this country."

Along the way, he took a swipe at Hillary Clinton for her attempts to distance herself on the campaign trail from the trade deal signed by her husband in 1993.

The Clintons "were the movers behind NAFTA along with big corporate America. My view is that NAFTA's been a disaster for America and has cost us over a million jobs," Edwards said to reporters after a town hall meeting here with voters. "She'll have to carry that burden herself in trying to convince people that now she's changed her view."

Asked about the absence of any A-list celebrities at his side this weekend, Edwards noted that he's had some boldface names with him during the campaign, including Bonnie Raitt. "Most people vote on the basis of candidates themselves," he said. "I don't think that is a crtical part of what's happening. People take this very seriously. I don't think they decide who to vote for based on what movie star is for you." But asked whether Obama's events with Oprah amounted to a "stunt," Edwards demurred. "Any presidential candidate has the right to bring somebody out who's supporting them to try to help attract a crowd," he said................
