Super Tuesday it isn't: Utahns have a chance to either help or hinder
With the 500-pound election gorilla known as "Super Tuesday" only a week away, neither of the leading Democratic presidential candidates could find time to campaign in Utah prior to today's comparatively lightweight primary election.

Today, Utahns have a chance to either help or hinder the Democratic candidates' hopes. All Utah residents who are U.S. citizens and will be 18 by the Nov. 2 general election are eligible to vote. Polling will take place from noon to 8 p.m. at public libraries throughout the state, except in Daggett, Piute and Rich counties.

It's an open primary, meaning participants don't have to be registered voters or Democrats. They will be added to the party's mailing list and have to agree not to vote in any other 2004 primary. But that is a moot point since Bush will be the Republicans' candidate once again, making a primary unnecessary.

Twenty-three of Utah's 29 delegates are at stake, with the other six remaining uncommitted until the national convention. Kerry is expected to win the majority, according to a Deseret Morning News/KSL-TV poll. The Dan Jones & Associates survey revealed Utah voters planning to participate prefer Kerry over Edwards by 26 percentage points (49 percent to 23 percent). Kucinich lags far behind, even though he was the only candidate to set foot in Utah recently.
