New Year's prediction. John Roberts will be nominated by GOP at their convention.
It seems like the current bunch are just test marketing for a focus group and their real candidate is back in the wings waiting for data to come in.

Besides complaining about his pay and long hours, he's ready to move up.

7. I am 100% certain John Roberts is not running, and I think you are too.
Why start oddball-prediction threads like this? OK, here's mine: Keith Olbermann is going to be the Democratic nominee. Have you talked to him lately? So there.

9. Why, because I think we are not being realistic enough about what is possible from the GOP.
I don't what us to be a party of reaction but get out in front of the curve for once and look at all the possibilities.

I don't think any of the current GOP candidates will get enough delegates for a clean win, so someone is waiting in the wings. If I were to pick a backup clone for *, I would send in Roberts.

10. Your use of the word "realistic" is ironic.

14. I think they'll nominate my next door neighbor. I think his name is Paul.
I actually understand where you are coming from. You think that they'll pick somebody that is a relatively clean slate but still holds some position of prominence so they look kind of qualified. I don't think that will happen, but I understand your reasoning. However, even if it did, it wouldn't be John Roberts.

Even if the Republicans were going to pick him over some other republican pulled out of thin air, why in the world would Roberts give up a cushy lifetime appointment to be beaten in the general election? The "GOP" (which doesn't speak with one voice, by the way) wouldn't risk making him do it (even if they could blackmail him or something) because they could easily pick some other blank slate ambassador to something.

15. The job security thing is a ball and anchor to the GOP. That is a major difference between us and
them. We think of jobs and stability as very, very important. They think of jobs as units of production and chaos as economic opportunity.

Other than that you are right on the mark about my thinking(not sure about your neighbor).

16. You don't think John Roberts cares about his *own* job security?
Why would he want to run for president? And, if he didn't, why would some GOP puppet master bother to make him? It's not like he is that special.

17. To him it would be a Golden Parachute, just like any CEO. Why do the job when you can appoint your
replacement? Also the risk is very low, if he doesn't win he is still Chief Justice.

18. well, ya got me there, I guess
I was assuming that he'd resign to run (but it is still almost as likely that my next door neighbor or any other random stooge out of the phone book will be nominated).

19. Yes, I do believe the GOP has a big problem, but they are great at marketing.
