Poll question: Republican Voters: Defeat them or Convert them?
Edited on Thu Jan-03-08 10:10 AM by rucky
Catch 22, here. We hate republicans, but we get suspicious of candidates who attract republican voters. I've always argued that most Republican voters are voting against their best interest, and now some of them are coming around (thanks, Bush). Do we welcome them - even if it means influence on the party that's coming from the right, or do we give them the finger and whoop their butts with the numbers we have?

Either way, Republicans are toast. It's just a matter of style & strategy for winning this election, balanced with concerns about the future direction of the Democratic party.

20. Great answer.
We need them as energy more than my conversion idea for them:

Soylent Green.

Trust me, I've known lots of Repub to Dem converts. They're
never quite over that whole R thing, even after years and years:
they always harbor those old "I want mine; screw you" ideas.

trouble here for painting them with a broad brush.

Edited on Thu Jan-03-08 10:11 AM by ixion
this country is all of ours -- republicans, democrats, independents, greens, libertarians -- everyone. The ONLY way we're ever going to make it is if we learn to work together.

Just my two cents.

8. And how, may I ask, can we defeat them without converting them?
Edited on Thu Jan-03-08 10:11 AM by LoZoccolo
Do you really think we could increase turnout in 2008 past the level we had in 2004?

11. I voted to convert, BUT
Yes, we could beat them with the numbers we have - especially if less GOP voters show up (which will happen among the X-tian Right, if Rudy or Mitt get nominated).

9. both - depends on the voter
most are worthy of conversion - which should be the first appeal. Some I've met will never convert, so I just enjoy ridiculing them.

I generally don't try to convert as much as convince - just give accurate information about why the Republicans are against their best interest, and how the Democrats could be. I've found that trying to 'convert' anyone to anything usually is a waste of time - you have to let them take their time and make it their own idea and decision to want to change. My target audience is broad but mostly middle-of-the-road independent voters who may not have all of the information. The hard-core Ted Nugent fan dittoheads are not worth the effort, although those are the ones whose hypocrisy I often enjoy exposing.

and less convincing to potential crossover voters.

13. Part of me says beat those bastards but...
The part of me that says everyone should vote period says we must convert them.
Regardless of the fact that they are mindless follow the leader types and never make up their own minds we need to convince them they need to support Democratic candidates. In reality that shouldn't be so hard except it would require the Democratic party would have to resort to the same deception tactics as the republicon party.

14. Defeat
Because while we are all Americans, we cannot accept the "Why can't we all get along" mind set that some advocate. Confrontation is a natural occurrence between those of differing beliefs, and it helps us to avoid stagnation.

I have more respect for an adversary who keep their principles, then one who changes sides just to be a winner, I may not agree with thier choice but if they have the guts to stay with it, they deserve respect.

I say defeat them, maybe it will teach them humility, maybe not. But it will teach them.

Just my opinion.

17. Convert enough to defeat the rest (with a hard-to-steal margin)
There will always be some who will cling to their selfish, warped positions no matter what. We have to let them go.

There may be others who are ready for a change and willing to consider voting Democratic. Those are the ones we need.

Aside from that, by applying heat and converting the Repugnants to energy, we can then run that energy through our power plants and in the end, The Repugnants will be ... finally...helping America.

Convert those THAT CAN BE CONVERTED WITHOUT COMPROMISING DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLES, VALUES, AND INTEGRITY.

Defeat the rest.
