The word "Change" as a political slogan is just so cliche...
Remember when Bill Clinton was campaigning back in 1992 while speaking of "the courage to change?" Well, we sure got change - Congress flipped to Republican control two years later.

Change by itself is not enough. We want to leave the next generation a better America than the one we inherited.

1. And "experience" is overrated. Lincoln & Washington vs. Cheney & Rumsfeld. nt

2. I've gotten tired of the word already.
Instead of "change", I want Edwards to adopt "new direction" or something. Anything but "change", since both Obama and Hillary have co-opted the word (for better or worse).

7. "New Direction" sounds like an R&B band from the 80s
Sorry, but that's just me.

3. It's a magic word
Do you promise to change?
Yes.
Okay, I won't file for divorce then...

9. Remember Saddam Hussein's "I Can Change" song from the SOUTH PARK movie?
That was pretty hilarious. Violent Femmes did their own version for the soundtrack CD, too.

4. Yeah. I would prefer 'progress', personally.
Or even 'transformation' (hey, I'm an est graduate).

5. Thank you for this post
It's so true. I can't stand these one-word campaign platforms. I need to hear more.

Bill Clinton talked about change, and also used to say he was a boy from HOPE, Arkansas...emphasis on the word, hope. (paraphrasing)

6. Interesting But the Clinton supporters
aren't tired of the slogan "Experience".

Any time you speak out powerfully for change, the forces of status quo attack.

8. Ya think? Well, let's just talk about keeping it in neutral.

I'm with you and full steam ahead, but we desparately need to change gears first.

11. I hear you...
...but as long as we are stuck with sound bites as campaign slogans, the search for effective one-word slogans still continues.

12. Same as it ever was. It must be effective, because everyone's
embracing the word, from both parties. Don't forget, most American's attention span is minimal; politics isn't their priority.

13. It's called marketing
Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 11:27 AM by light catcher
the repubs have been masters of marketing for years while the dems have struggled to define themselves. I find it refreshing that the dems have learned to simplify their message.

16. When it comes to getting elected, cliches WORK.
Change may not be "enough," but it is enough to get people to the polls to vote for you. And now that it's become obvious that "change" is what's firing up the people most likely to vote this year, anyone who ignores the popularity of that meme and tries to stick with another one instead, no matter how wise or well-considered it may seem ("experience," or "He can only talk eloquently about change but I can really deliver change") ignores it at their own peril. At least that's how I see it.

The watchword this year is not "experience," "results," "safety," or anything else.

It's "change."

Live with it, deal with it...or lose. Be you Democrat or be you Republican.
