Obama's Rise Dismays Clinton's Supporters

By Alec MacGillis
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, January 6, 2008; A01

MILFORD, N.H. -- The pillars of the New Hampshire Democratic establishment had filled the front tables at the party's annual dinner Friday night, the better to applaud enthusiastically when Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, their overwhelming choice for president, talked about her readiness to lead.

But when Sen. Barack Obama took the stage, hundreds of Obama supporters swarmed the front of the hall, surrounding their tables and sending people such as Beverly Hollingworth to the exits.

"I'm really worried about him," said Hollingworth, a member of the state's Executive Council and a former state senator, as she headed for the door. "Other people have been working their whole life for change, and have made good progress. This is just rhetoric."

With the New Hampshire primary Tuesday, Obama is riding a very big wave, spreading consternation and bewilderment through the ranks of Clinton supporters here struggling to make sense of what is unfolding before them.

<>Mary Louise Hancock, the 87-year-old grande dame of the state's Democrats, said she "resented" that independent voters were poised to influence the outcome of the Democratic primary, saying it turned the vote into a "personal-liking affair" dominated by "students and the trendies."

37. Fine, but it isn't Obama's fault he has their support.
Just as it wasn't Clinton's fault back in '92 that he had their support as well.

Hillary, though, needs to realize that without many of those indy voters, her husband could've lost big in NH and any hope of a comeback would've been thrown out the window.

Until the minute they cast thier vote. I'm a registered Dem.. but I can switch to whomever I want.. and so can you.

I'd be much more RESENTFUL if committing to a party 10 years ago locked me into who I had to vote for my entire life.

Be happy we have this freedom.. some countries don't.

59. I agree. I've seen that in NY dem organizations
Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 03:40 PM by DLnyc
Sometimes it seems like they're much more interested in their little club and keeping it exclusive, than in the actual work of politics and government. Good and progressive as these people are (or were), once they get too comfortable in their positions, it becomes more about protecting their turf than about actually working for progressive change. In other words, they want progressive change as long as it doesn't change the power structure in their local organization.

has a history of loving the Clintons. :eyes: I wonder how accurate you'll think they are when they turn on YOUR candidate ... and they will, you know. Sooner than you think.

Remember, success doesn't sell papers. The "spectacular fall" of a person who was succeeding? Now THAT'S what gets those papers flying off the shelves.

28. Is anyone worried about winning in November?
I'm at a loss with the lack of a singular focus from Democrats across the country. Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing. What has transpired over the past week should be raising flags all over our party. I'm very concerned that it hasn't, and that many don't see the opportunity before us.

44. I believe Obama has a much better shot at winning the GE than Hillary does
Polls seem to reflect that, and the fact that Hillary is having trouble attracting Independent support backs that up. Obama brings out minorities, Independents, and traditional Democrats and lefties. I think if he's the nominee, we could have a blowout. The Republicans would be licking their wounds for years.

I say this as an Edwards supporter.

57. I kind of agree with her re: independents but it is what it is.
I'm sure glad they're trending toward Obama since he's my guy but in general, it chafes me that they won't commit to a party. In the 2006 elections, indies went for Dems overwhelmingly in most races. Most indies indentify with Dems on issues.

Here in AZ, we have so many independents who vote Dem but we don't get the resources we need from the national party because we don't have the registration numbers. Independents want progressive policies but they don't want to support the party that will most likely bring them about. Therefore, I don't think they should be able to vote in primaries. However, I do think they should be able to register for a party on the day of the primary.
