Edwards Supporters Only Please. Can I have a show of hands?
I have been seeing a lot of posts stating " I have been leaning toward Edwards "
How many of you are leaners? I'm an unequivocal straight up John Reid Edwards supporter and have been this whole cycle.
In my gut. In my mind. In my heart. And to the finish.

27. I've been with Edwards all along.
I've tried to keep an open mind, but I feel very strongly we need change, and I just can't see that coming from the other candidates.

Edwards is smart, strong, secure in his desire to bring real change to America, he has a passion about it that the others simply don't have. Plus, he's put his money where his mouth is with the public financing. I strongly believe we need to get the private money out of the campaign process, and to do what Edwards has done takes integrity.

He was my first choice in '04 as well, although I ended up voting Kucinich as a protest vote in Texas's worthless primary. I like Kucinich but haven't been as impressed with him this cycle. I held out longer on committing to Edwards this time around because I was hoping for Al Gore to jump in. Edwards, Feingold, and Gore were my top three potential candidates when folks were discussing this on here about a year ago; Edwards is the only one who ended up making a run.

Was Obama supporter first. He lost me with his "gays and Democrats" need to be more friendly towards religion comment.
Then I was a DK supporter. He lost me with his support of Obama over Edwards--although his Ron Paul comment made me squirm.

72. I liked him when he ran with Kerry....
I have been watching he and Obama and Hillary since 2004. With each speech, interview and article- and I have come to like and respect him more. I did not want to commit too early because it didn't seem prudent. But in Aug of last year-I openly committed to Edwards, both in talk and dollars. The next 4 years will be hell on Earth for our country, our party, and our economy. We need to have someone in that can make the tough decisions and is not afraid to make choices. I have come to trust Edwards when it comes to making tough decisions. I will vote for Obama down the road-once the mess has been cleared away. Edwards represents the can do person for me.

Edwards has faced some of the toughest things we can face-death of a child, serious illness of a spouse (and possible death). He has faced these things with grace and honour. There will be decisions he will have to make that no one should have to make. I trust him to make the best choices but retain his humanity. He may not have experience but, I trust him to choose the best council when making decisions.

in 1972 when he won his first race. He was so young that an 18 year old college freshman like me could identify with him. I've followed his career ever since. He truly is an excellent, gifted individual.

189. I've been a political animal since 1960 (age 7)...but
I've been late to really appreciate Joe Biden. Honestly, I haven't had the opportunity to watch a single debate, but, because people here at DU raved about him and posted YouTube snippets of him from the debates, I came to realize what an asset he really is and what a great POTUS he would truly be. Unfortunately, the every-four-years-dog-and-pony-show is a poor selector of presidents and presidential candidates. (The best example of our faulty system is, of course, the current resident in the White House.)

Anyway, if you were tuned in to Joe Biden from the beginning of his long Senate career, that's really something in my book.

He's 64. Perhaps there's some slender chance that he'll try again. Like Wesley Clark in 2004, I think he woke up some Democrats who now realize that there's some real talent in our camp capable of competent adult leadership.

I know that, "on the issues," Edwards would make a better President than Obama.

On the other hand, at this point, Obama the more "inspirational" candidate. As Maureen Dowd so eloquently said

The Obama revolution arrived . . . like a balmy promise, an effortlessly leaping lion hungry for something different, propelled by a visceral desire among Americans to feel American again. (Emphasis added).

152. Many-years Kucinich supporter here, who has decided to support Edwards for strategic reasons.
The main reason being that I DON'T want either Clinton or Obama to be the nominee. Supporting Edwards is the only realistic means of preventing that.

I realized a few weeks ago that hanging on for Kucinich means being guaranteed that a corporatist (HRC or OHB) would win the nomination. It looked no different to me than being a Nader voter in 2000 -- sticking to principles but enabling the absolute WORST candidate to take the election.

It was different in 2004, when I caucused for Kucinich all the way to my state convention -- I could have even been a Kucinich delegate to the national convention, but I couldn't afford to take on the travel expense and time off work.

Had Howard Dean remained viable after Iowa, I might have eventually made a strategic decision to throw in my support for him, in order to try to derail a Kerry nomination. But there really was no viable alternative to Kerry once the primaries started to fall to him like dominoes. So there was nothing to lose by sticking with DK for as long as possible. And I dutifully voted for Kerry in the general.

But at this point, there still IS an alternative to the corporatist, MSM-approved candidates. Kucinich will ALWAYS be my first choice, because of the principles he speaks for. But those priniciples will be NOT be served by sticking with Kucinich and ending up with Clinton or Obama.

Edwards, at least, is bringing issues to the conversation that NO other front-runner is doing. It's not that I think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread -- that's Kucinich, always. But Kucinich can't push the big guns out of the race, Edwards has a chance.

So, albeit reluctantly, it's Edwards for me. I've already sent him money, and I've sent money to Symbolman, too, who is flying to New Hampshire to do an end run around the MSM in order to bring more visibility to Edwards.

See what Symbolman is up to here

159. There was a GD thread started a couple days ago about Obama poaching Edwards' material.
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 08:33 PM by scarletwoman
This IS the year of economic populism. People are hurting -- finally hurting enough to look around and start wondering why they feel so fucked over.

I actually don't care whether or not Edwards is a "phony", as some people accuse him of being. Just the fact that he's TALKING about how the middle class is getting the shaft is valuable in and of itself.

If he were out of the race, all we'd be hearing about would be "change" and "experience" -- and not a word about how corporatism is corrupting our government. Yes, that's been DK's message all along, but a message that isn't being heard on a broad scale doesn't make for broad change.

Kucinich votes in 2004 did absolutely nothing to move the Dem party to the left, because he could be so readily dismissed as being "fringe". Edwards cannot be so easily dismissed -- even though the MSM is doing their best to ignore him. But he won second place in Iowa, he can't be completely relegated to the outer darkness like DK can.

I'll settle for someone saying the right things if they can actually be heard. I'll worry about holding him to his words once he's gotten the nomination. In the meantime, he's expanding the parameters of the political conversation, and that's a damn good thing all by itself.

167. Never said this on DU before
But Edwards was my first choice BEFORE Kerry. I like him better than Kerry. And I honestly think that being on the veep ticket that time will be what did him in. Because otherwise, if he had stayed in the senate and fought and stayed away from the "we must heal, forget counting the votes" attitude of Kerry he would be the clear front runner this minute.

So I think accepting that deal to be v.p. with Kerry was the worst mistake of his life-and ultimately may have been the worst mistake for our country. But he thought he could win-and I thought THEY did win.

He's the real deal. Obama talks the real deal but he will cave the second he's challenged by the Republicans in office. He has the entire time he's been in the Senate. My problem with him is not that he's likable and sincere or not experienced enough-but that he thinks that he can reason with criminals and thieves. They have to be defeated and shamed. He wants to make nice with them.

He was my second choice after Gore for a long time - once it became clear Gore wasn't getting in the race, he moved to first place. He's been on my card for over a year. Only Gore was ahead of him.

I consider myself firmly in his camp, and I am hoping that a surge is building nationally for John Edwards. A surge that will take him all the way!

Onwards, Upwards,
Edwards. 2008

John Edwards is the true deal for me, and has been from the moment Howard Dean burned-out in 2004. If not Dean, then it's Edwards, and nobody else comes close, not even kucinich or Al Gore. I want John Edwards to fight for me and mine and you and yours. I'm a union steward and know exactly what Edwards means when he says that the corporate fascists understand only one thing: strength. There's no "getting along" with them and they won't quit gutting America voluntarily. They have to be stopped. Hillary won't stop them; she's part of them. Obama won't stop them; he's too weak. Edwards will stop them from taking everything out of this country's center and giving it away to the highest overseas bidder. He wants to take care of Americans first, not last.

I hope he can follow through to the convention. He is single-handedly changing the debate among the top-tier candidates. Six months ago there was little talk about the plight of the underclasses. Now they're all over it. Edwards forced them to pay attention to issues that matter to all of us.

I'll support him any way I can until the last light goes out because he speaks loudly and clearly to the Democratic majority.

243. I'm leaning his way...
...as it's looking as though Kucinich can't get the nomination. Things can change, I suppose, so I'm not committing, but if a Kucinich vote looks like a throwaway later this year, I'll gladly vote against Clinton and for whoever else looks like the competition.

And end up voting for Clinton, anyway, in the general.

Newb here!

I'm undecided between Edwards and Clinton. I supported Edwards in 2004, and in fact, thought the roles should've been reversed with him running as POTUS. The man has charm AND "beef" so the saying goes.

I think Edwards has a real chance at this. He will sweep thru the south and could very well knock Obama into 2nd or even 3rd. I'm a big fan of Richardson too, and would love to see him somewhere in this, maybe VP nom.

247. Always been for Edwards
I thought in 2004 that if he had been on the top of the ticket instead of Kerry, we might have won, vote irregularities or not. I really am disgusted by how the media is shutting him out so completely -- he has a great message and is the only candidate that can defeat the Republican nominee, in my opinion.

On Super Tuesday, I will probably still vote for him, but I don't like the fact that he told his Iowa supporter to make Obama their second and not Edwards. Edwards would have been the natural recipient of those votes.

256. I'm 100% for Edwards.
When Hillary and Obama have to quit due to scandals, Edwards will be the candidate. He is the only candidate that doesn't have a skeleton in his closet. He is the real thing.

If the corporate media had something on Edwards, they would be talking about it. They are pushing Hillary and sparing Obama because he is an easy tear down. They are scared of Edwards. I'm for Edwards. He is the real thing.

265. I have supported Kucinich
since he matches my ideology exactly. Sadly, I suspect Kucinich does not have enough back up to conquer the media monopolies in time to make the election. They are just too powerful at this time.
I now am behind my second choice candidate, Edwards, and hope Kucinich stays active as a progressive, and is included in the next Democratic administration.
