Everyone knows about dearmary.com, right?

I haven't seen anyone on DU talking about this - maybe I just missed it. A website has been set up for sending letters to Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter, Mary, who is running his re-(s)election campaign.

I heard about them yesterday, then saw the founder and some whack job woman on CNN debating whether or not this is "gutter politics". The whack job was claiming that it's wrong for Mary to be used as a political footaball. The founder was saying that Mary has been quite out for a very long time, and is in fact even "married". So, go send Mary a letter and let her know what you think about her working on her Dad's campaign - the very campaign that seeks to make sure that her "marriage" is not valid.

Here's a bit of what they say about themselves on their site.

"DearMary.com is a project of DontAmend.com and the Equality Campaign, Inc. We are a national civil rights organization made up of thousands of volunteers across the nation with the express goal of defeating the proposed federal constitutional amendment. The co-chairs of DontAmend.com are long-time civil rights advocates Robin Tyler and John Aravosis, who were also co-founders of StopDrLaura.com."

""Mary is a public figure who has chosen to put herself in the public eye as a professional gay rights advocate, first at Coors and then at the Republican Unity Coalition. She has also put herself in the public eye by accepting a $100,000 a year salary to run her father's re-election campaign. (Note: the salary in the Washington Post story is "after" tax.)

The public has the right to ask this very public person why she is running the re-election campaign of a man who would make her and millions of other Americans second-class citizens, especially in view of an Oct. 13, 2000 Washington Post report that Mary "has lived for years with a female partner, and wears a gold band on the ring finger of her left hand." The public also has the right to ask Vice President Cheney why he believes gay relationships are a threat to society, but then hires a person in a committed gay relationship to run his re-election effort. "

"We hope to convince Mary to do the right thing and publicly urge her father to oppose any proposal to add anti-gay prejudice to the US Constitution. And we hope to publicly shame the vice president into defending his own daughter by publicly opposing this amendment."
