??? --- NBC's Brian Williams will host Nevada debate but does not know how to pronounce Nevada
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 08:38 PM by LVZ

I wonder why East Coast media types don't pronounce:

The nation's first primary: New Hamp-shy're

The capital city of the nation's first caucus: Dez Moynes, Iowa

Barack Obama's home state: Illi-noise

I guess that they would be ashamed of their ignorance and might take the time to correct it.

Then again, East Coast news media arrogance is nothing new to those west of the Mississippi.

1. I wonder how many candidates will be able to say it correctly as well.
It could be a good test.

5. Edwards says it right, or at least he did this evening.
I think I've heard HRC say it correctly but slip with the dreaded Ne-VAH-da; at least she's trying. Haven't heard Obama say it yet; I suspect he'll get it right (he seems as careful with the details of political pandering as the rest of them).

One day I'll live in a state that doesn't get mispronounced. First it was CAUL-o-RAH-doe and now it's Ne-VAH-da. sigh.

And I live in LAS Vegas, not LOS Vegas - and I don't live in a hotel. Really.

4. Perhaps I'm not gettiing it, but...
...isn't Nevada pronounced NEH-VAH-DAH? And, isn't Des Moines pronounced "Dehmoine?" Of course, Illinois is pronounced "Ill-in-oy?"

7. Oh please. A lot of people not from the East
mispronounce cities, towns, etc. from the East all the time.

How do you pronouce: Worcester?

People mispronounce names of places they are not from all the time. I guess news people should learn better but I don't believe it is done purposely, just to piss people from that area off.

Brian Williams stated that there are two different pronunciations for "Nevada" so I don't know about that one.

12. I have no problem pronouncing Worcester correctly but ..

Nevada, "a state", is much larger than a smallish city in Massachusetts, don't you think?

I already provided state examples: New Hampshire and Illinois. No American considered very educated would mispronounce these states even though the spelling might suggest a different "natural" English pronunciation. Why is it different for Nevada and Colorado? Short answer: Eastern provincialism.

19. I think newscastes, public servants, etc.
should learn correct regional pronunciations.
I am Hispanic myself and I have lived all my life hearing people absolutely kill Spanish surnames, for example. All the time. Educated people. And they are not all from the East.:hi:

16. Worcester might be helped by changing the spelling
/'wʊ.stə/

Where'd the r and c go?

13. A high society lady meets a farmboy at a party and they exchange greetings...
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 09:07 PM by Bucky
After a few moments chatting, the high society lady asks the young man, "So, my dear, I notice you have a western accent. Where exactly are you from?"

He answers, "I'm from Iowa, ma'am."

The lady gives a little titter and replies with a haughty tone, "Oh, bless you, my dear. But around here we pronounce it 'Ohio'."

My point being the fault lies not with Brian Williams but with those broke down cow pokes who can't even pronounce the name of their own state correctly.

21. --->>> a few news media folks - right vs wrong <<<---
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 10:13 PM by LVZ
A sampling of national media folks - how do they rate?

Good - these folks get it ...

MSNBC: Keith Olbermann, Contessa Brewer, Norah O'Donnell, Chris Matthews, Tim Russert, Lee Cowan

CNN: Wolf Blitzer, Candy Crowley, Richard Lui, Veronica De La Cruz

FOX: Shepard Smith, Major Garrett, Greg Jarrett

Lazy - these folks don't ...

NBC: Tom Brokaw, Brian Williams

MSNBC: Dan Abrams, Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Alex Witt, John Harwood

Trying - inconsistent but at least they try ...

MSNBC: David Shuster, Tucker Carlson

Why not add to this list? Perhaps I could compile and send it to the networks to encourage a little more "journalistic research". It is ironic that people like Brokaw probably pronounce Kazakhstan correctly more often than they do Nevada and Colorado.

15. Say it like this:
/nə'væ.də/

Or, if you're actually speaking Spanish, /ne'βa.də/. The Eastern pronunciation of /nə'vaː.də/ isn't right.

17. I hope the OP never gets a job on TV
because if so, I'm going to give a little test.

Can you pronounce:

--Mentor, Ohio
--Canandaigua, New York
--Nunda, New York
--Bergen, New York
--Gallipolis, Ohio
--Conneaut, Ohio

If not, you're not allowed to call yourself a news anchor. :sarcasm:

20. I had kind of been trying to make that point.
That regional pronunciations are not always obvious to outsiders.

I do think newscasters who are seen all over the country should make their best effort. But I do think unintentional errors will always happen. And I don't think it has to do with snobbery or anything like that. If you are not familiar with a region you are just not going to be familiar with certain pronunciations.

Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 09:56 PM by LVZ
How many Senators do they have? How many electoral votes? How often are they in the national news media?

Ridiculous post - apples versus oranges or more like a single apple versus an orange grove.
