My Day at the NH Polls and the Tsunami of Women Voters
I was the Clinton visibility captain for Londonderry, NH, the second busiest polling place in NH, and this diary focuses on my observations of the voters on Tuesday 1/08/2008.

My day began at 5 AM and I arrived at our single polling location shortly after 5:30. First job was to plant about 50 signs along the drive leading to Londonderry High's Gymnasium. Having gotten up well before other campaigns, I of course put our signs on the prime real estate up here. The tops of plowed snow piles, the entrance corner, all along the drive and around the fenced entrance to the polls.

Those signs look pretty and make supporters feel good but that's not what won New Hampshire for Hillary.

The Un-Polled, Unregistered women of NH came out in record numbers for Hillary. The pundits can pull their hair out all day but the answer to why the polls were wrong is simple.

Those who were never polled, never called, never canvassed came out for Hillary.

1. I wonder how many Republican women also voted for Hillary?
I don't think I have seen any numbers on that?

7. Um, the Independents voted OBAMA by a large margin...
...By a larger margin than in Iowa, if reports are correct. If that trend holds, it obviously means big problems for Hillary in a potential general election.

Hillary beat obama concerning the Independent vote in New Hampshire.

ON EDIT: So does that mean big problems for Obama in the general election?

17. You give me your sources, I'll give you mine. You are mistaken.
For Independents:

CNN Exit Polls:
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/epolls/index.html#NHDEM

Obama: 41% Clinton: 31%

Here's a nice summary of the exit polls from the Huffington Post:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/01/08/new-hampshire-exit-polls_n_80565.html

From the Politico excerpt:
"Here are the groups in which Obama enjoyed a significant margin over Clinton: men; young voters (18-24); voters making more than $50,000; voters with post-graduate education (a good indication of professionals); independents; first-time voters; voters without religious affiliation; men without children and single men; voters who said they were getting ahead financially; voters who thought the war in Iraq was the most important issue; voters who wanted change; and voters who wanted someone who could unite the country."

From the Marc Ambinder excerpt:
"Obama won independents, getting nearly 50% of their votes. Independents comprised about 41% of the Democratic primary vote."

So, where are you hearing that Hillary won the independents? Because Bill Clinton said her supporters are "fiercely independent"?

19. But they can declare themselves as indepedent to the pollsters.
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 12:37 PM by Kristi1696
And they did. And they told the pollsters they voted for Obama.

ETA: You were referring to the "independents", right? Just want to make sure.

6. It's math that wins primaries.
Does it make you feel superior to inject Karl Roves name where it's not needed? Or is just your way of trying to be special?

15. Thanks for posting this... all the punditry and commentary is
pretty stupid here and on the idiot box (aka TV) if they don't recognize one thing and this is Hillary had a huge female turnout to vote for her.

That's what won it for her.

It wasn't the cry, diebold, the debates, or Obama's off-handed (and funny imo) comment.

It was women.

It will continue to be women.

It will be women in the rest of the primaries.

It will be women in the general election if she makes it that far.

And if she wins it all, good on her and good on every woman that has fought for equality in America.
