We see what we want to see... (Kerry, Edwards, Obama)
I was watching the morning news and the topic turned to the Kerry endorsement of Obama. The newscaster (Sawyer) expressed her bemusement over the Kerry turn to Edwards which was accompanied by several grinning/buddy-buddy pics of the former running mates. Stephanopoulos explained that we "shouldn't believe everything we see in those pictures". Behind the scenes Edwards was pushing Kerry very hard to be more aggressive and there was a lot of stress between the two. I imagine when Kerry conceded so quickly, Edwards was fit to be tied. Stephanopoulos then went on to say that when Edwards decided to throw himself into this presidential race, countering an agreement to stay out of it until Kerry had decided whether or not he would enter, it brought out a lot of bad blood between them. Right now they can't stand each other--active dislike. You all may have known this--I didn't.

I remember when in 04 people were swooning over the Kerry-Edwards pictures. Aren't they gorgeous! Look at those families! So attractive! *My* candidates! So embodying of "not Bush*... It is so easy to fall for an attractive candidate and to get caught up in a mass movement of adulation. Now in Obama add an ability to speak--a honest statesman/salesman's talent for tapping into what people want to hear and feel now. Can he deliver as a president--we honestly don't know because it is all based on hope.

When Kerry endorsed him, part of me thought it was a petty way to get back at Edwards for one thing. But if Kerry sees a kindred soul in Barack, does that mean that Barack is more of a go along-get along type than Edwards would be? When I heard that it was Edwards who was the more aggressive of the pair in '04, I developed more respect for him suddenly.

When Bush leaves office and the new president has to deal with the Shrub Legacy to this nation and this world and Republicans in office won't have changed their partisanship or style of confrontation, do we want a compromiser that moves us toward the centerline that the right has set or our own tough aggressive Dem who will wrests back what was lost? Which one of our candidates is it?

1. Well, I think your post is a perfect example of "we see what you want".
You choose the version that you like and ignore the other version.

When I heard that it was Edwards who was the more aggressive of the pair in '04, I developed more respect for him suddenly.

Really! Who told you so? The media? The same media who told us there were WMD.

2. Most accounts show Kerry wanted Edwards to be more aggressive in the traditional VP attack mode
But Edwards clearly wouldn't do it. Remember his pathetic performance during the VP debate with Cheney.

7. Kerry Was Pathetic... Who Was Swiftboated and Did Nothing? Not Edwards!
Kerry was a terrible candidate on this issue alone which killed his candidacy ... and who wanted to recount Edwards or Kerry in Ohio? Edwards... Kerry might well be President if he had the stomach of Edwards! But alas, Kerry does not.

11. Isn't a VP supposed to defend the ticket? What exactly was Edwards' role:
a free ride?

16. He wanted to and Cahill shut him down.
What was he supposed to do when the campaign wanted to keep quiet and hope it would just go away?

8. Well, I did say that it was the first I'd heard about it--
I was not aware of other "versions".
And as far as media is concerned we're all at the mercy of whatever we read or see as the basis for our conclusions. Frankly, I don't know who or what to totally trust about anything any more. Perhaps, I should have written "if true...".

I'm confused as to what it says to you that you would post it in this thread.

18. He's posted it in several threads, and yes it has nothing to do with anything.
I think he just wants to know who's coming to dinner.

We may as well throw in the towel right now, IMHO.

No more than any of the other candidates. If people actually bothered to learn something about him, they'd know that he's walked the walk throughout his entire professional life.

13. Agreed.
I suppose that it all comes down to what we individually hope for.
I worry about the fact that each candidate has so many handlers, coaches, strategists, pollsters, etc that we are not really seeing the true person. We're basing our decisions on a package. Postulating: Hillary has likely been positioning herself since bitten by the political bug to rise in the ranks and being married to Bill has first hand knowlege of tactics. Obama could have been advised to write his book with popular consumption in mind with an eye on stepping up to the highest office. Edwards, well spending all that time and money in Iowa ahead of everyone speaks to (someone's) ambition to put him in the presidency.

I never have been able to jump on the bandwagon. The more popular a candidate is the more my inner alarm goes off that something is being overlooked. I'd like to construct a virtual president with all the things that I like about each candidate since none of them survive under close scrutiny (for me).

10. The Edwardses mythologized K-E their own way
They are the ones who started putting their own self-interested version out for the press. Kerry's never gone there, but maybe he should.

25. I read your post as
stating that Edwards is a fighter as opposed to Kerry who is not. If I misread it, I apologize. And no, of course Kerry is not running, we all know that, but that does not mean he should be maligned and have all kind of stupid dirt thrown at him. I do not mean to imply that you did that, but there was plenty recently, and I suppose it gave my fingers more of a twitch than usual :-).

21. Quote from Kerry's speech
yesterday

“The old guard sometimes has a hard time acknowledging an individual who breaks the mold. Well lemme tell ya something. Barack Obama isn’t just going to break the mold. Together we are going to shatter it into a million pieces.”
