Poll question: How racist were Clinton's remarks?
Edited on Sat Jan-12-08 08:47 PM by antiimperialist
By now you must have heard about the "fairy tale" and the MLK/Lyndon Johnson's remarks by Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Although some of us may think they were racist and some may think they were not, there may be shades of gray. With this said, I post a scale of 1-10, with 10 being very racist statements, and 1 being not racist at all.

How racist do you think these two statements, taken as a whole?

1. Not racist in reality according to Huffington Post article. Being used by Obama out of context.

3. The trend is what was complained about
The emails, the drug dealer comment from Shaheen, the Muslim comment from Kerrey, then the dis against MLK and it was an unnecessary dis. Now we have the "shuck and jive" from Mario Cuomo, the hip black friend, and today's latest, hispanics won't vote for a black man.

If that doesn't say something about her campaign, I don't know what does. But don't stop cherrypicking to deny racism because god knows it won't be the last time.

Oh, and whatever you do, don't ever say a white lady is "likeable enough", because we all know that's just the most underhanded thing you could ever say about a white lady. :eyes:

6. Which of those comments didn't happen?
Or do we want to talk about voter disenfranchisement in IA, NH and NV? The NV law suit is going to cost her big time. I wouldn't be surprised if she had to withdraw by Friday. You don't do that shit to the UFW and related unions, believe me. She is so fucked.

All of it happened and all of it is directly connected to Hillary's campaign. Not by innuendo, by names right on her own web site. Look it up yourself.

15. Read the link above. It's a strategy by Obama to paint Hillary as racist.
How much more do you want. He is DLC he actually endorsed Lieberman http://www.talkleft.com/story/2006/04/02/164/90446 His campaign has a history of planting smear campaigns against Hillary http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Barack_Obama:_U.S._presidential_election%2C_2008/Anti-Hillary_viral_web_%28political%29_video There is a ton more if you are inclined to read it on that website. He isn't any better or worse than Hillary. It is time to wake up and smell the roses.

16. He made those people say that stuff??
He's making Hillary disenfranchise voters?

Obama is not DLC. He has disassociated himself in the past. Ned Lamont endorsed Obama.

Edwards and Clinton supporters are absolutely delusional in the lies they've told to defeat Obama. That's the only thing they have to run on, lies. And in the case of Hillary, dirty campaign tactics.

9. Both comments taken out of context. LBJ was a strong president and he DID get the Civil Rights act
It was largely his efforts. It would not have gotten passed without him. There were many racist congress people who did not want it passed. It is very well known that it was his efforts.

The Fairy Tale comments was about his position on Iraq.

If Obama's campaign is using this to attack Senator Clinton all I have to say is, "Politics as usual."

12. No, they aren't talking about just this
It's a diversion to keep people from looking at the trend of racial comments, pretending that there's nothing going on except a fairy tale remark and an innocent swipe at MLK.

Just forget the muslim mails and Kerrey's muslim "compliment", the drug dealer smear, the "shuck and jive", the hip black friend, the hispanics won't vote for blacks garbage.

It's all just a big coincidence that the Clinton campaign keeps having racial remarks spew out of it. You bet.

17. It's the trend, not the single statement
The OP is distorting the complaint by pretending it's just about that one line, and it's not. Today someone from Hillary's camp decided to try to scare people by saying latinos wouldn't vote for a black man so don't vote for him. And you might want to take a look at Josh Marshall's blog today as well. She really isn't who you thought she was.

22. Talk about divisive wedge issues
It's perfectly fine to drop that bomb around.

I said it was the trend, not just the one remark.

Clinton's supporters in the south are telling their constituents not to vote for Obama because America will never vote for a black man, it's a fantasy, you know-- a fairy tale. That's where the racial undertones of that comment comes from. It's the trend, that and about ten other racial comments. It's disgusting that people will wilfully ignore all of this.

the fairy tale. There have been some racist things done by the Clinton team towards Obama. But the Fairy tale remark and the MLK remarks were not racist.

Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 12:08 AM by vee
has ever picked up a protest sign.
I can see her telling the Vietnam protesters during the 60's

"It takes a President to get it done", (Using her logic Tricky Dick got us out of Vietnam!).

If it weren't for the war protest of the 60's we would have been in Vietnam till the 80's.
If it weren't for the sacrifices of activist like MLK we would never have heard
of a voting rights act.

And if it weren't for a bunch of Bush enablers we never would have gone into Iraq!
Too bad we didn't have anyone to protest.

28. Well...
I picked up a protest sign, and I fought for MLKs dream every day in ways that I could. Hillary made no racist statement. If you think the Civil Rights movement would have been successful if the President of the USA hadn't supported it you are loony.

That doesn't take away from those who marched or from those who sat in their homes and over their fences and talked about the inequities, then added their voices where they would be heard. But if the President hadn't been behind it, it never would have happened.

Just like the Women's Rights movement needed a President and a Congress that would give them their rights.

38. You are spinning this out of "factual territory here." Read history. LBJ pushed it through
congress. She is likening herself to being that strong. She was right in saying it.

and your comment about MIK and the voting rights act completely disregards the thousands upon thousands of protesters from the 1940's through the 1960s who pushed the Civil Rights Movement. Fannie Lou Hamer , Prathia Hall, Ella Baker, The Women's Council In Montgomery.

It was the people who made the MOVEMENT happen.

LBJ made the legislation happen.

Hillary was correct in her statement. My how Critical Thinking really has left the USA. (At least it seems to have left DU)

It's this type of spin that damages our discourse. Similar to "There you go again." (Do you know who spoke that famous line which led to 12 years of religious right republicanism?

but it was a stupid thing to say. Yes, he was addressing the media's coverage of Obama, but the statement could easily be taken out of context. Either way, who cares what Clinton has to say about anything anymore? Shouldn't he be going around on another world tour with the president's daddy? I swear, I haven't seen Bill nearly as petty toward Bush or republicans as he's acted in recent weeks toward Obama...but then again they both expected a cakewalk and a coronation...The audacity of having someone challenging her.

I've been disgusted the way he's acted through the campaign. Him and his wife can STFU regarding the war. They have no credibility on it whatsoever.
