OBAMA: CLINTON MLK COMMENTS 'LUDICROUS'
Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 12:19 PM by jezebel

Obama called the "notion" that his campaign is responsible for the backlash Hillary Clinton has faced about her comments on Martin Luther King Jr.'s role in the in the civil rights movement "ludicrous" in a conference call today to announce the endorsement of Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill.

"Well this is fascinating to me," Obama began of Clinton's remarks on Meet the Press, in which she accused the Obama campaign of stirring the pot among African-American leaders about her remarks that it "took a president" to pass civil rights legislation.

Obama characterized Clinton's remarks as "tired Washington politicians and the games they play."

"She made an unfortunate remark about Martin Luther King and Lyndon Johnson," he said. "I haven't remarked on it. And she offended some folks who thought she diminished the role about King and the civil rights movement. The notion that this is our doing is ludicrous."

1. He says this with a straight face as his campaign sends out press releases
And...the media sits silently by and asks no questions about the hypocrisy.

Fairy tale.

17. I never got an Obama press release, Guess what, I think her MLK statement was divisive, and showed
a serious lack of judgment. Most people capable of thinking for themselves would reach that same conclusion.

23. Obama can get away with comparing himself to MLK and to JFK
and if Clinton responds she is divisive. No. That is not fair, nor accurate. She was suggesting that Obama is all talk. MLK was not all talk. He was action. Obama is no MLK. That is what Clinton was saying.

And that is not off limits. To shout racism, because she said that is not appropriate. It is distorting and twisting and playing politics.

20. Please not the word "LUDICROUS" did not refer to her remark.
Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 12:49 PM by jasmine621
It refered to "the notion that" the Obama campaign was responsible for the backlash.

This is how the MSM gets us all the time. Do we need to keep doing it to ourselves?

I watched that Clip of Hillary's remarks about MLK and Johnson and she said nothing but the truth. All one has to do is listen to the historical Johnson tapes played every Saturday on C-Span. There is no question that MLK and the very brave civil rights activists of the '60s brought the civil rights issues to the forefront. They risked their lives and those of their families and friends fighting for civil rights and justice. To recognize the contribution that Johnson made to the process that enshrined the civil rights fight into law does not take away from MLK and others. But the truth of the matter, and those old civil rights fighters who still live among us know this, is that with out the strong-arm tactics and behind the scenes deals made by a courageous, tough President Lyndon Johnson, those laws would not have passed at that time. Even Kennedy was not strong enough or had enough southern support to pull that off and had Kennedy lived things would have been much more difficult for civil rights. Remember, Hoover had JFK just where he wanted him.
Besides not giving Johnson the credit due him, arguments that only blacks paid the heavy price for fighting against segregation and injustice, must offend the senses of the families of the whites who also gave up their lives and livelihoods to take a stand against racism in this country. And MLK was about more than just the evils of racism. He was about peace, reconciliation, forgiveness, redemption.

3. An internal memo is different from a public statement.
All campaigns do track what is going on to keep an inventory of sorts.
But Obama has refrained from making a public statement.
A very big difference.

9. From the article cited above a quote.
The document provides an indication that, in private, the Obama campaign is seeking to capitalize on the view - and push the narrative - that the Clintons are using race-related issues for political leverage. In public, the Obama campaign has denied that they are trying to propagate such a perception, noting that the document never was sent to the press.

13. words that should be banned in campaigning...by pundits, parties and candidates
ludicrous, outrageous, unpatriotic, absurd, I am sure there are many more, they do nothing except attempt to stifle any debate. and we NEED fucking debate on these and many more subjects!

In fact I would ban those words outright from the English language!

One would then have to say things like, I think Mrs Clinton said those things to hurt my campaing or something as personal without sounding plastic!

24. Hillary Clinton's remarks about MLK and presidents are correct....
King's civil rights activism would have been for naught had there not been congressional action on what he was demanding.

Ignore the history surrounding those remarks and you risk being taken as fools and illiterates.

26. a link to THIS thread should also be included in the threads about the MTP Clinton appearance
as well as this one quoting the same passage Obama so rightly characterized:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x4051457

Obama would so be a stronger candidate than Clinton in Nov it's painful to even think about it

Why do you think Democratic pols across the country are agonizing about the prospects of her being at the top of the ticket?
