6. Not Me
Call it a wild-assed hunch... but I don't think that, under any circumstances ever, Dean would be a willing and active participant in a hedge fund that specialized in predatory lending schemes to the poor.

8. I am not a defender of Edwards generally
but i think it should be noted that 90% of fortress's business is passive/hedge investing, not activist. Whether or not JRE should have taken an advisory job with them I leave to your judgement. I work in finance and consider myself fairly progressive, so I am conflicted here.

42. Are You Saying That Fortress Did Not Have A Strong Position In Predatory Lending-Based Investments
Or that they invested heavily in opportunities that revolvbed around predatory lending, but were passive?

and it was unlikely that JRE was aware of these positions...

14. He was my choice after Dean left the race
I was disappointed when he agreed to be Kerry's running mate. I was at the first rally they did together. The crowd responded much better to Edwards than they did Kerry.

10. I never really had a firm choice in '04, but I will say that Howard Dean
played no small part in helping me make the transition to the proud liberal that I am today (before that I was ideologically a Rockefeller Republican, though I always considered myself a Democrat.)

12. Yep. Tis me. ....I go for the potentially electable mold-breaking liberals
Actually, my beliefs are Kucinich. But he's not a good presidential candidate, in the sense of electability. So I go with the liberal candidate who is more mainstream, but is a comparatively a progressive maverick against the current centrist status quo.

I believe both Dean and Edwards could do well if they didn't have the DLC Democrats against them, and their stooges in the MSM.

27. I was all-Edwards in '04
That was a fun time, knowing we were backing a great candidate but one who had a severe uphill battle. Very few Edwards threads in DU throughout '03. I remember counting dozens of Dean threads for every 1 for Edwards.

In '08 I switched to Mark Warner until he decided not to run. At that point I drifted back to Edwards but not with as much passion as '04. I thought he was by far our best hope vs. an incumbent in '04, but in an open race and against a better field I haven't been as enthused, partially because I knew he was destined to run 3rd.

39. Only speculation (I'm of the Kerry '04/Obama '08 variety), but on Kos:
The fact is Dean was most popular on DailyKos in '03/'04, and now Edwards is the most popular on DailyKos today. Sure, more users have come on board, and some have left, but it isn't a stretch to think the Dean -- Edwards '08 migration is real.

41. that's sort of the sense i get
but it was stupid of me not to mention Edwards folks in 04 who are Edwards folks in 08. I would assume that is the largest sample of supporters.

Anyhow, thanks for the answers folks.

44. Measuring the 2008 NH vote, NOT true that Dean 04 support goes to Edwards 08
First, I don't know much about this process of analysis and don't know if it is reliable or not. But it sure is fascinating. It shows where the 2008 votes came from in relation to 2004 voters. By this measure, which again should be taken very cautiously, it may be that online support for Edwards doesn't reflect real world support for Edwards, but it's probably as good as the OP's guess.

Caution: Those numerals are not percentages.

This regression produces a number of coefficients that represent how much support was transferred from one candidate to another. For example, if the coefficient between John Kerry and Hillary Clinton is .73, that means that for every percentage point that Kerry had in a district in 2004, Hillary tended to pick up .73 percentage points in 2008. (…)

Clinton
.73 Kerry
.66 Lieberman
.18 Clark
.12 Edwards '04
-.05 Dean

Obama
.93 Dean
.45 Clark
.38 Edwards '04
.15 Lieberman
.09 Kerry

Edwards (2008)
.37 Edwards '04
.37 Clark
.24 Kerry
.15 Lieberman
.00 Dean
