McCain stands by rebel flag stance
Associated Press

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate John McCain says he still opposes flying the Confederate flag atop the state capitol in South Carolina.

The issue became a hot debate issue in the 2000 presidential contest, and the flag was eventually taken down and placed elsewhere on statehouse grounds.

Protesters waved rebel flags today as McCain's bus procession arrived for events in Greenville and Spartanburg. Some passed out literature recalling McCain's push for the flag to be removed.

A questioner confronted McCain about the issue today as the candidate spoke in front of supporters, saying he believed McCain's position was wrong.

5. Exactly....if by "stands by his rebel flag stance" the OP meant "pandered like a pro" then it's OK
Saint John McCain, High Priest of the Straight Talk Express, 2000 Presidential Campaign:

When asked by a reporter how he felt about the Confederate flag during a January 12 campaign event, McCain replied: "Personally, I see the flag as symbol of heritage."

The Arizona senator expressed regret for that stance on Wednesday, telling the audience of Republicans: "I feared that if I answered honestly, I could not win the South Carolina primary. So I chose to compromise my principles."

"I promised to tell the truth always about my intentions and beliefs. I fell short of that standard in South Carolina," McCain said. "While my response was factually accurate, it did not answer how I personally felt about the flag."

2. Which "rebel flag"?
I thought the whole problem was that SC wanted to fly the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, which was never an official flag of the Confederate government and which was later used by the KKK as a symbol of racism. If SC doesn't want a fuss over this, all they have to do is fly a bona fide flag of the Confederacy--and why not the Bonny Blue flag of SC?

4. I would imagine the commonly known one.
The Confederate battle Standard.

You know, back when I was growing up, the good church-going people I knew in South Carolina, where my mother was from, would never, ever have flown or countananced the flying of that flag. It was a ritual left to the kind of people that my maternal grandmother called "unseemly". I have this theory, based upon experience, that a lot of this Confederate Battle Standard Fetishism resulted from northerners moving south to chase jobs, and over compensating for their new surroundings.

7. Our Government Has Been Taken Over By the Most Unseemly People
and they come from all over. Most of them are pretending to be something that they are not, and pretending to be a cowboy has been in style for a long time.
