Shit To Hit Fan - ETA: November 2008

As the country hurtles inevitably towards the November elections, so the Republican voters hurtle towards the inevitable truth: everything you were told is a lie, everything you were promised is not forthcoming, everything you banked on is gone.

Across the nation, Bush-supporters sit slack-jawed and uncomprehending. They did everything they were told to do, everything they were told was right.

They voted for Republicans, they denounced the ungodliness of the Liberals, they donated their money at the mega-church and prayed. They contributed to the campaigns of those who vowed to overturn Roe v Wade, who swore to adhere to the principles of fiscal responsibility, who assured that decorum would be returned to DC politics, who held out victory in Iraq as a done deal.

And now they wonder why they find themselves where they are: responsible for an unprecedented national debt, a country that is more vulnerable than it was on 9-11, a quagmire in Iraq and Afghanistan, a broken military, poverty, homelessness and unemployment numbers on the rise, and a drastic recession that is no longer a threat but a looming and unavoidable reality.

Even those who worshiped at the feet of the Limbaughs, the O’Reillys, and the Coulters wonder why they are no longer laughing along at the plight of the downtrodden, the medically uninsured, the unemployed – because despite their faith in their party, they are now among those who are derided as being laughable.

How could it be? Did they not come and partake of the Holy Kool-Aid, just as FOX-News told them they must in order to be saved? Why are they now being gouged at the pump, losing their savings, watching as the equity in their homes plummets in value – right alongside the non-believers who refused to bend their knees to the Great Christian Leader, the one whom God Himself appointed to lead righteous Americans along the sure path to glory and riches?

Where is the math that Rove assured them was reliable, along with the Republican majority that would exist for decades to come? Where is the prosperity that was bound to happen under a GOP-controlled White House? Where is the global respect that was a given once a true patriot like George W. Bush was at the helm? Where is the good and honest government that would be transparently visible to all citizens?

Eventually, the truth comes out – and when it does, the shit hits the fan. And the truth is now out there, for all Americans – Republicans included – to see.

The lies, the deceit, the missing money, the deleted emails, the destroyed videotapes, the indicted politicians, the incompetence, the self-serving manipulation of the facts, the disgrace of a bumbling idiot and his cohorts, the lost jobs, the lost industries, the lead-laden toys, the poisoned food, the torture, the deaths, the casualties, the homeless vets – all of the chickens are coming home to roost, while the GOP insiders walk away from their positions inexplicably wealthier than they were when they took office and not-so-inexplicably less than anxious to explain to the faithful that not only have they been had, but their anxiousness to be had was part of the plan all along.

What goes around comes around, and the demise of the Republican party – as has already been confirmed by the number of registered Democrats now far exceeding the number of registered Republicans – is about to come to fruition.

The shit spewed by the GOP will hit the proverbial fan this November, and it ain’t gonna be pretty. But it is inevitable – and long overdue.

Invest in fans. They're gonna be the next big thing.

Even the theocons are starting to see that the GOP establishment is just treating them as "useful idiots" since David Kuo's book on the subject.

I assume they simply listen to the voice from the pulpit, Faux News and the other talking heads that have brainwashed them into believing the current shit-storm is simply an indication that Heaven on Earth is just around the corner. Just like victory in Iraq, economic prosperity for working people and a flood of educated children, all the product of the maladministration's policy of "No Citizen Left Unscathed".

For anyone who still believes "teh polls," the fact that *Co has maintained an official approval rating over 20% can ONLY be explained in one of two ways:

1) The pollsters are lying.
2) This is the approval rating among the faithful of what's left of the Republican't party: Die-hard Republics really ARE are the deeply stupid, incredibly gullible morans we've been laughing at.

As always, it's dangerous to generalize. Some conservative Christians are stupid and gullible, and believe everything Faux Noise tells them. Others read books, or are smart enough to come to the same conclusion as Kuo independently.

I don't share the certainty that a republican defeat in november is a done deal. Although I'm not a Hillary-Hater I still fear that, if nominated, she'll split her own party, while uniting every wing-nut thug to vote against her. And while traditional evangelicals might balk at the Mormon Romney or the gay-friendly Giuliani, if they promise to imprison or otherwise marginalize all of the people they fear and hate, their pastors will tell them to vote for them, and they will.

unfortunately republicans have an unusually high tolerance for shit. we are up to our ankles shit, i hope the repubs can smell it now.

I know a lot of good, intelligent people who spend little or no time following politics beyond what is presented on the network news at 10PM. It's amazing what these people (many of them college-educated professionals) don't know about what's been going on these last 7 years. They were raised as "good Republicans" and their "family values" and general attitude towards the two mainstream parties hasn't fundamentally changed. The framing of issues the rightwing has so successfully hammered together the last 3 decades has by no means been deconstructed. Even though many of them have come to realize through what passes for conventional wisdom that Bush has been a terrible president, that does not mean they will throw the lever for the Democrat on election day.

This is going to be a tough journey to November with roadside bombs buried unexpectedly in our path by the dirty tricksters we know are out there. Let us not exalt too soon.

However, this election is not going to be about ideals or family values; it's going to be about realities. And the reality is that the middle-class is hurting, and they want the pain to stop - and many of them will vote on the basis of who they think can make their lives better and easier.

When you're afraid your job is about to disappear, afraid you can't make ends meet much longer, afraid your savings are dwindling down to nothing because the cost of living is going up and your paycheck isn't, you're going to vote for the candidate you believe can pull you back from the edge of disaster.

When Bush took office, the split between registered Dems and Repubs was an even split. Now registered Dems far exceed the number of GOPers. There's a reason for that.

This administration has created incredible hardship for millions of Americans - and the only answer the GOP is offering is telling those millions of people that those hardships simply don't exist.

The voters know the country is a disaster. The Republicans know the voters want change; i.e. a moving away from the policies that created the disaster.

The GOP can't acknowledge the obvious = that it was their president and their party who implemented the policies that created the disaster.

Ergo, they cannot really offer anything substantive in the way of real change, because that means admitting that they are responsible for what now needs changing.

The only thing they are really able to talk about changing is the shade of lipstick on the same old pig.

Politicians in power can lie about all kinds of things, and get away with it. But the one thing they can't lie to people about is the reality of their own lives. The GOP just keeps blabbing about the soundness of the economy, the great job opportunities that are out there, blah, blah, blah.

You can convince the average Republican that things are going great in Iraq; it's on the other side of the world, and they'll take your word for it. But you can't convince the guy who's now struggling to make ends meet that he's doing just as well financially as he ever was. You can't convince the guy whose last two jobs were outsourced that outsourcing isn't having an impact on anyone.

And most of all, you can't convince the now almost 80% of people who believe the country is on the wrong track that it's been on the right track all along, and they're just too stupid to see it.

The Nazis were also a minority party and we see where that went.
Though Hitler had a high approval rating and now percentages are reversed, we have the "Patriot" Act, the "Thought Crimes Act", the "John Warner Act" and a long list of signing statements. The REAL battle could be yet to begin since we are effectively in check.

Here's hoping for Election'08:toast:

but reading the posts here I see there is a good deal of worry that the masses
can and will continue to be fooled... not so much because they are blind to their
own plight, but because BushCo is so skilled at blaming others for anything that
goes wrong.

Most of the dark mood here is partly be due to the daily disappointments, continual
bashings of the Constitution, unbridled hubris, massive greed, heinous crimes, etc., that
continue without being punished. We are like battered children having difficulty raising
our eyes toward heaven to even hope it can get better.

The notion of the sh*t hitting the fan is a vivid image, but I see it as such a very temporary
event. Will it have good results? What about their continued grip on power? BushCo
is trying to set things up so the next administration will have to bow to their policies.

Even if out of power they may rule. There is a deadly sense of foreboding that BushCo has
an iron networked grip on this country and its future and that nobody will dare try to hard
to move it in another direction due to pure terror of the kind of reprisal that may be meted
out. These people are dangerous criminals capable of anything. They have proved that.

The neocon fascists have been gaining strength for over a half century.... many of them work
behind the scenes. They are perhaps the most dangerous of all.

They are even working hard to re-write history. BushCo is spending a great deal of energy
and money to make sure that their legacy is a designer affair controlled by their own
historians. If you thought that the Reagan adoration lore is a nauseating pack of lies -- wait
'til you see the first movie of Bush depicted as the new Winston Churchill.

And people are lured and brainwashed by that crap.

I wouldn't even put book burnings past these people. These are the same people who trashed
all the libraries at the EPA to destroy and control scientific data to protect the chem/pharm
industry. What are they capable of to protect their legacy from hard scrutiny and criticism
by future generations?

Why? Because too many traditional Republican voters are just as fed up with what this administration has done to the country as Democrats are.

We here on DU often discuss how the Republicans only care about whether they've got theirs, and screw everyone else. Well, guess what? The Republican middle-classers are losing their jobs, their health insurance, their savings, their shot at the American Dream at the same rate Democrats are.

And they're not any happier about it than we are.

bottom line. Reasonable, moderate, Republicans are just as fed up as we are and are losing just as much as we are. Their stock portfolios are falling faster then their home value. Their jobs are going overseas and as their man McCain stated, "never coming back."

I spent the month of October crisscrossing this country from sea to shining sea, and I'm here to tell you that there are some pretty pissed off people.

BTW, the so called Bible Belt is a popular urban myth. The heartland of this country is just as fucked as the coasts.

But, what are the Republicans going to do about those pesky Democrats? Well, if Barack is the candidate, you can bet that the issues will be race, experience (or lack thereof), race, religion, race, middle names, race, gun control, race, and race). Your daughters could be white house interns fer chrissakes.

If Hillary is the candidate, the issues will be gender, inexperience, gender, bitchiness, gender, fidelity, sexual orientation, and gender.

If Edwards is the candidate, the issues will be sleazy money-grubbing lawyers, expensive haircuts, big houses.

If Kucinich is the candidate, the issues will be UFO's, socialized medicine, UFO's, abandonment of allies, and UFO's.

They'll attack with whatever they can find or make up.

The point is that none of them have done that so far - and isn't it a bit late in the game to start doing that now?

The most any GOP candidate has done in that direction is not mention G.W. Bush while campaigning - not exactly the same thing as overtly distancing themselves from his administration and its policies. In fact, passing over any mention of the current Republican in office while extolling the virtues of his predecessors SPEAKS VOLUMES ...

and ignoring Bush speaks volumes.

But that sort of thing might resonate, might bring out the Republican voters.

All I'm saying is that we can't assume an easy victory, even with the monumental screw-ups of the current administration.

They'll invoke Reagan. Heck, they'll invoke T.R. and call him a Republican if they think it'll help. They'll fire up the "dirty tricks" squads to go after victory at all costs.

They will invoke the heady, carefree days of Reagan. They will remind their base that they are God-fearing, family-values, moral Christians. They will denounce their opponents as godless heathens who will, if given power, install drive-through abortion clinics on every street corner in the nation.

What they won't do (because they can't) is assure financially-strapped and insecure voters that the policies that have caused the mess the nation is in were wrong to begin with (can't admit to that phenomenal a mistake), and will be changed (again, can't say you'll 'change' the very thing you've supported as being 'the right way' all along.)

The American voters, Dems & Repubs alike, have made one thing abundantly clear since this election cycle started: They are unhappy and they ALL WANT CHANGE.

And change is the one thing the Republicans can't (and won't) offer.

nominate a fighter who will reverse the takeover by the oligarchs...

For all their bluster the majority of these folks are cowards who can't admit to themselves that they've got it wrong.

Their psyches simply aren't equipped to respond to those sorts of revelations. Far safer to rationalize and hate "the other side" -or if they have the money, ignore the whole foul mess altogether.

With the percentage of self-identified Republicans low and dropping (who would admit it?) and with independents largely siding with the Democrats, the fact that the majority of this shrinking minority remains mindlessly committed may be less important than it seems.

Most thinking people have realized by now that Republicans simply cannot govern, or even control themselves properly. ("They can't even run their own lives / I'll be damned if they'll run mine.") I think this awareness will be reflected in the November results.

What I savor, and hope to continue to savor, is how they were already pronouncing the death of the Democratic Party and the "'Great' Realignment" - all republi-CONS all the time (hmmm... sounds like a radio format - don't get me started...). And the "Uniter" will have served to unite not just the rest of the world BUT hopefully a solid (and uncheatable) majority for us Good Guys.

I yearn to see them swallow a very bitter pill in November.

I keep thinking back to whichever DUer, back in 2004, spoke of the Dark Siders needing to have "the snot beaten out of them" to get the message that theirs is NOT the so-called "Way Forward." It's certainly not ANY "Way Forward" that benefits a single soul except for the elite one-percent of the one-percent. Only the "have-mores" get anywhere with these pirates and their greedy numbskull followers.

I hope we utterly run over them in November. I hope we do indeed beat the snot out of them. Every last one of them. And every last molecule of snot, too, for that matter! I wish I'd kept track of who here said that originally so I could give him/her proper credit each time I quote that line. It's one of my favorites.
