Bill Clinton, Stumping and Simmering - advisers say the campaign is trying to rein him in

Bill Clinton, Stumping and Simmering
By PATRICK HEALY

Hillary Rodham Clinton may be the spouse running for office, but it is more Bill Clinton who appears to be feeling the heat.

After weeks of complaining publicly about Barack Obama’s record, the news media’s coverage of the Democratic presidential race, or both, Mr. Clinton on Wednesday ripped into a television reporter who had asked him about a Nevada lawsuit concerning participation in the state’s caucuses this Saturday. Mr. Clinton believed the question had seemed sympathetic to Mr. Obama’s stakes in the suit, Clinton campaign officials said.

A federal judge in Las Vegas ruled in the case Thursday, with a decision that will apparently benefit the Obama campaign. The judge, James C. Mahan, held that some hotel-casinos, as arranged by the Nevada Democratic Party, would be permitted to set up caucus precincts on site so employees who work Saturday can participate. Many of those Nevadans are members of Culinary Workers Union Local 226, which has endorsed Mr. Obama, and their votes on Saturday could help him significantly against Mrs. Clinton.

The suit was brought by the state teachers’ union, which maintained that the arrangement gave the hotel employees an advantage that others working Saturday did not have. Some of this union’s top officials have endorsed Mrs. Clinton. But her campaign has denied involvement in the suit, and when the television reporter suggested a connection between it and her supporters, the former president, stumping for her in Oakland, Calif., narrowed his eyes. As his aides looked on with concern, Mr. Clinton’s voice took on an edge.

“When you ask me that question, your position is that you think that the culinary workers’ vote should be easier” than those of other Nevada workers, Mr. Clinton told the reporter, Mark Matthews of KGO-TV in Oakland. “If you want to take that position, get on the television and take it. Don’t be accusatory with me.”

Mr. Clinton’s temper has been an issue for him as long as he has been in public life. But it has played an unusual role during the current campaign, his face turning red in public nearly every week, often making headlines as he defends his wife and injects himself, whether or not intentionally, into her race in sometimes distracting ways.

Some Clinton advisers say the campaign is trying to rein him in somewhat, so that his outbursts become less of a factor to reporters, but his flashes of anger only seem to be growing. Last week, for instance, a clearly agitated Mr. Clinton told Dartmouth students that it was a “fairy tale” for Mr. Obama to contend that he had been consistently against the war in Iraq. And in December he said that voters supporting Mr. Obama were willing to “roll the dice” on the presidency.

“The bottom line is, his outbursts don’t help the campaign,” said James A. Thurber of American University, an analyst of the presidency and Congress. “They become an issue, and it can grow into a real problem. I think the campaign is worried about him right now.”

We disagree. This exchange show Bill has become a grumpy old ass, who makes up shit along the way.

People can decide for themselves -

20. Sorry, it is YOU who are spinning. Bill behaved like a bully and a jerk.
Like how dare a reporter actually ask a tough question. It is obvious the Clintons think they are the annointed ones to reside in the WH, and don't think they should have to do something as low as actually earn their votes. That is incredibly arrogant, and we'll see how primary voters react.

43. I saw it too and he lost his cool and 'ripped' into the reporter
He has too much public and political experinece to be losing his tempter when asked legitimate questions. He should have kept his opinion about the suit, that the campaign was allegedly not involved in, to himself if he didn't want to be asked about it.

60. When I ran for local office, I had to have some "conversations" with my husband.
While I appreciate that he wanted to defend me and to verbally attack my opponents who were saying bad things about me and to write Letters to the Editor about it, I couldn't let him do those things. So I gave him his "talking points" and told that if he supported me, these were the only things he could say. He didn't like it but he was wililng to abide by it. I explained that if he "defended" me, I would look like I wasn't strong enough to handle things myself and that would hurt me more in the voters' eyes than anything else.

I was running for County Mayor, a CEO type position, and was the first woman to ever run for that position. My opponent, an R, thought he was entitled to the position and really worked at trying to discount me. I had to show that I was smart, capable, and wasn't intimidated. My opponent did win, but I made him work really hard for the office that he thought should've been "given" to him. And I received more votes, and a higher percentage of votes, than any Democrat who's run for county-wide office in the last 30-40 years.

But then, my husband was willing to abide by my restrictions. I think it might be a lot harder to get Bill Clinton under some degree of control.

But he needs to stop being an issue because it distracts from Sen. Clinton's capabilities.

9. Bill is getting bad press because he turned the whole question around on the interviewer..
who was shilling for a negative reaction from the former president to be used as a 'sound byte'.

Bill wasn't "grumpy". I watched the video. The interviewer was scared shitless when Bill forced him into a corner to answer the question. The interviewer was there on a mission, he failed to elicit the reaction he was looking for and was playing out a scenario in his head of telling his handlers he failed to get the job done! HA!

I don't think he was thinking that he had failed in his job. Depending on what he had come in thinking about Clinton, it might have been:

- Wow, this is going to put me on a U tube video seen by hundreds of thousands

or

- This is not the Bill Clinton I liked and defended to friends in the 1990s.

or just

- wow, this is a story my boss will love to get it shows a different side of Bill Clinton.

If he felt he had failed to get a story, he can't possibly be a journalist in today's gotcha days.

The idea that Bill is hurting the campaign. The fact is that he has to get a little controversial for the media to cover it. He is getting is words out there, thinking people will read or listen to them and thats all he is trying to do. The HC campaign loves it when the media covers him.

27. That's an absurd contention.
about that mailer.

Let's not forget that Obama supported a bill that was almost indistinguishable from Kyl-Lieberman last March, and then chose not to show up for the vote on Kyl-Lieberman. Let's not forget her floor speech about the IWR, in which she clearly warned against invasion. Let's not forget that she also tried to get Byrd's sunset provision inacted that would have limited the war to 1 year. Let's not forget that Obama voted for every funding bill once he got to the senate, something that he said he opposed prior to that.

How did Obama vote on the Patriot Act?

12. I don't buy it...
It's not that I don't think Bill has a temper, but I find it next to impossible to believe that the same man who dealt with world leaders for the last 15 years, some of whom he's probably had serious disagreements with, is all of the sudden incapable of keeping his composure when dealing with reporters or a discussion of his wife's campaign. It would be really convenient if Bill could go out and say all the things Hillary couldn't, politically, and then she could just disavow all his comments.

53. This could just be the setup part

where they establish that Bill is a "loose cannon" whom the campaign "can't reign in". If that concept gains acceptance (IF it does) Hillary will have someone right in the heart of her campaign, who knows both her strategic and tactical plans, and whom she can talk to on a daily basis. Bill can get the ear of just about any media outlet very easily and can say whatever he wants. If it goes bad, Hillary can always say, "Well, everyone's known for some time that we don't have any control over what my husband says, of course we sometimes see things differently, though." All campaigns do this, but usually the surrogate has to keep some distance between themselves and the campaign so as not to make it too obvious that this person is shilling for someone. In this case, Hillary could potentially have a surrogate that is still completely in sync with the campaign.

14. It's as if he doesn't trust her to do it right herself. I find it patronizing.

17. Of course that's not it,
Bill's playing the same role as Elizabeth and Michelle, who both say much harsher things than their husbands. It's called politics.

32. The times I saw him angry
really angry were all related to Hillary. The rawest nerve and the greatest ire all erupting over any criticism of his wife. He is in for extremely rough times and one might worry about his health. I think, after all these years, he is trapped in his weak spot and vulnerable to intimate GOP torment. I think there are times when most of us see a righteous place to let it all come out. He can't be in the campaign doing that with presidential power anymore. Other spouses get very angry on the campaign trail when one or the other is personally attacked, but it is the sudden lack of authoritative power that seems to have Bill lashing out with more frustration over every bump in the trail- on Hillary's account. I don't think he is alone among past presidents who tried to get involved in arenas where they didn't belong anymore. It is jarring and will be very public problem and a torture without end which he may be wise enough to realize but helpless to change.

Every time they get his goat of course it signals some type of trouble for the campaign, the worst being an image of a frustrated, struggling campaign even if it is only Bill personally, the price of conjoining their two legacies for a campaign plus.

38. This is a big problem if Hillary were to become President.
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 10:33 AM by sparosnare
Would she indeed be able to make her own decisions, or would Bill be arguing and influencing her every step of the way? I know we all have good things to say about his presidency, but the fact is, he IS NOT RUNNING. He seems to think he is however, and that isn't good. He need to step out of it and allow Hillary to run by herself.

41. Bill is stressed! Quick, someone find a chubby intern, stat!
Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

If Bill wants to play attack dog for the Hillary camp, he's gonna have to deal with some pressure.
