Poll question: ****Democratic Presidential Poll (four remaining)****
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 11:54 AM by Flabbergasted
This ought to be interesting since there seems to be some changes of sentiment this week.

1. P.S. Right now I'm supporting Obama, but recently was for Edwards...
I'm thinking this was a rash decision but I'm gonna hold out.

9. You are making a mistake. I saw Edwards yesterday.
I was deeply moved when he clearly stated he will enforce the Constitution, close Guantanamo, stop the warrant less surveillance and end torture. Edwards was the first to come out with a strong economic stimulus package that will really build the American economy. Edwards will end American participation in combat in Iraq within the first 12 months in his presidency. Obama decided he had to match Edwards' pledge. I doubt Obama's resolve on this issue. He will find an excuse to keep the troops fighting. Just wait. Bush is doing his best to give Obama (or Hillary) an excuse. Bush's plot to keep troops fighting in Iraq is is arguably unconstitutional. We need a president we can count on to end our illegal involvement in Iraq.

Edwards healthcare plan will provide health care to all Americans. Obama's healthcare plan leaves 15 million Americans uninsured.

Edwards will prosecute war profiteers. To my knowledge, Obama has said nothing about this.

Edwards does not take money from the number of corporate executives that Obama does.

Edwards opposes nuclear energy until we have a solution for nuclear waste and will not permit the building of the huge coal facilities until they can be operated without releasing so much CO2.

Edwards has stated that he will be a strong supporter of unions and worker's rights when he is president.

Obama is not the strong union supporter that Edwards is.

Edwards is the only candidate who will strongly fight back against the trade agreements that are exploiting working people all over the world and creating a class of heartless super-rich who are perfectly willing to sit by and turn working people into slaves. Unless we turn this situation around, we will enter a dark age and devolve into a feudal society.

Obama is the candidate of compromise. This is not the time to compromise with the extremists that have dragged our country down over the past seven years. We need Edwards. He is not an extremist, but he has the courage to stand up for what is right for American and the American people.

14. I hear ya....
My reasons for switching were bogus. I see Edwards as an extreme long shot at this point and went to Obama because he is my first choice between Clinton and Obama. Ugh.

28. More and more people are coming forward for Edwards.
Yesterday I tabled for Edwards at a Farmers' Market, and a couple of people even used the words "coming out" for Edwards. The media has made Americans think that Edwards is not competitive, or worse, not running. That is false. If you have money, please donate to the Edwards campaign today.

37. Hillary has NOT beat Edwards yet in an "untainted" primary...
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 05:02 PM by calipendence
She lost to him in Iowa, and her vote counts in New Hampshire were questionably aided by Diebold voting machines. Michigan is FUBAR. There's no state yet that she can claim she's actually beaten him without controversy around vote counts. Granted, she probably beat him in New Hampshire, but we really don't know the true totals in my book!

The media wants you to think that it's all over! Don't swallow that line of bull! There are a number of reasons to continue to support Edwards:

1) He still might just win. It's way early. The delegates in each state aren't "winner take all" like they are in the electoral college. He's still not the odds on favorite I'll grant you. But if anyone's being "slighted" by the polls in this three way race, it's Edwards!
2) Even if he doesn't win, he'll have a sizable number of delegates in his hands going in to the convention, and most likely in a three way race, we'll have a split and brokered convention then if it gets to that point.
3) Even if he doesn't win, and he sticks in, and we all vote for him, he can force Obama to take on more firm progressive stands on issues if he wants our votes and for him to get out. Obama will have to decide whether he wants to win with Edwards supporters' votes or not. If he doesn't and he cedes the victory to Hillary instead, then he's not really about trying to be a progressive candidate, and he's not worthy of our vote. If Obama wants the progressive votes, with Edwards still in, he'll have to "ante up"!
4) Even if Edwards doesn't win, and neither Hillary's nor Obama's camps wants to move to build a coalition with Edwards, there's always the chance that we could draft in Gore to be the nominee instead to unify the party. That would be certainly better in my book than either Hillary or Obama. Though Gore's sat out primary season, and perhaps he didn't want to deal with that part of the election, perhaps the lack of having to "do the primaries", and those appealing to him then that he might be the one hope of unifying the party behind one candidate would lure him into the race.

I see a lot of upside to Edwards staying in, and very little downside. The only downside is if Obama isn't progressive enough to move towards some of Edwards' agenda to unify the two camps. If Hillary wins in that situation, then I'd say that us just voting for Obama instead of Hillary probably wouldn't have gained us much if he's that unwilling to come over to Edwards' and progressives' side.

In that scenario, it might be worth looking at the third party solutions.
