If Hillary had mentioned Reagan like Obama did she would
have been savaged here on DU. That is what is funny about this whole business. You know it is true. Some probable comments would have been - "Oh Hillary talked about Reagan and how he changed the country, shows her true colors" "Hillary is Reagan-lite" etc

But since Obama said it, well, it was AOK and perfectly appropriate. Give me a freakin break!!

A lot of Obama supporters will go to any lengths it seems to accept whatever Obama says or does, and I haven't seen not one word of criticism from an Obama supporter regarding this.

Stop making excuses every time Obama says something that upsets DEMOCRATS.

And by the way, many people said they weren't Hillary supporters and they took offense too. So trying to play "its only the Hillary supporters card" isn't correct.

Same mind-set.

Sometimes amusing, in a bitter sort of way, but never productive.

Like torture, cults are never okay... even the really cool ones.

...But in the MSM and eyes of many independents and left-leaning Republicans, he has gotten praise.

It was a risky strategy, we'll see if it works. Don't fool yourself that this was a slip of the tongue on his part.

22. The inspiration-free zone inhabited by your polarizing candidate of choice is the starting point
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 12:55 PM by BeyondGeography
Democrats have been priding themselves on their superior wonkishness for years, and where has it gotten them? Loss after loss, and, when we've won, we play defense because nobody outside the party committee really know what we stand for. Along comes Obama, a human get-out-the-vote machine who inspires our natural constituencies and motivates new people to join our side (yes, as Reagan did) and all you Clintonistas can do is hold your nose, chant the equivalent of Dingell-Norwood, and extol the virtues of Hillary's mastery of the fine print.

Welcome to Loserville. Population: all those who continue to be willfully ignorant of Obama.

27. The biggest fairy tale: Presidential elections are won on policy
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 01:14 PM by BeyondGeography
Democrats always outscore Republicans on health care, education, and, nowadays, even the economy. And yet they routinely lose presidential elections (7 of the last 10). Nominating Hillary, an uninspiring, divisive figure who gets high marks for understanding policy details fits the mold of past defeats. She might get by this year, but her inability to win people over will forever limit her ability to govern. After four years of unrelenting Clinton bashing, the country will go elsewhere.

The funny part for the sneering Clintonista crowd is the only way out for her would be to put Obama on the ticket. Hopefully, it doesn't come to that.

30. I thought this is about changing the trajectory
More than Clinton did. If Obama wants to change the trajectory like Reagan he needs a little more like trajectory changing proposals similar to Reagans but for progressive issues of course, otherwise he is aiming to do no better than Clinton. Clinton accomplished the vast majority of his campaign promises.

11. I wouldn't have "savaged" Hillary for saying it.
The fact is that Reagan was influential. That the mere mention of his name can send this place into such a shit-storm is testimony to that.

I didn't criticize Obama's remarks, because I didn't see anything to criticize. If he had said that he agreed with Reagan's POLICIES, on the other hand, I would have spoken out against that.

15. If I may ask...
What did you find about those comments that you could criticize?

-Do you deny that Reagan was influential?
-Or do you feel that Reagan must be erased from the history books and that mentioning his name alone is unsavory?
-Or did you read some actual praise for Reagan's policies in the remarks?

Also, I'm hoping that you didn't read the "quote" that discussed the "red states". That quote was fabricated by the Edwards campaign and they have retracted it with an apology.

I would freaking jump for joy. That's the difference between the two candidates and if DU would pull their collective head out of their ass they would see that's exactly what Obama just said.
