Edwards: I’m the champion of working people and the middle class
Edwards takes on Obama and more

By Jon Ralston · January 18, 2008 · 4:34 PM

NewsONE anchor Jeff Gillan got time with John Edwards today. Here are some snippets of the interview that will air tonight:

re the economic stimulus package:

I think we need a stimulus, the economy’s really slowed down. I think we need to get more help to more people. There are about 50 million people who are left out by the president’s plan. It also doesn’t provide any long-term benefit. The benefits are short term so what I would do instead is invest in green infrastructure, which is enormously important in Nevada which has so much opportunity in that area. I mean what we can do is create a million new jobs including a lot of new jobs in Nevada and those jobs are important for the economy of Nevada but also important in helping stimulate the economy nationwide. We gotta deal with this mortgage foreclosure crisis 16.42.30 which is a huge issue in Nevada and I’ve proposed a very aggressive to help families that are in danger of losing their homes.

stimulus will give 800 - 1600. Is that enough, should there be more:

I think there are more things that are effective. I talked about creating jobs by investing in green infrastructure, helping with this mortgage problem. You also gotta get help to the states. Many of our states budgets are in bad shape 16.43.02 and if we get help to them that keeps the money in the economy. We gotta expand unemployment insurance and modernize it so that it covers more people because when the unemployment rate’s up, we need to be sure that people can still support themselves and they’re continuing to spend money and invest in the economy 16.43.20 all of this is aimed at the same thing though — which is to get this economy jump-started.
