How many people are affected by the "cult of personality"?
It's a natural tendency to get caught up with the crowd frenzy when Brittany gets out of her car or when J-Lo walks down the street. People do not understand why they go with the crowd? They simply follow to get a glimpse at the excitement. Is this a part, maybe just a small part, of the Obama movement??

1. Well, to have a cult of personality, you gotta have a personality.
That puts some limits on some folks right there.

11. Actually, it's mostly those lacking one who glom on someone who does
Most cult prone people are not very sure who they are and need to sublimate someone else's life for theirs.

2. I think it's more like, in a small part....
The MLK movement. And I don't see why that would bother anyone. Barack Obama has some freah ideas, his attitude is excellent, and he WILL be able to bring this country back together, as MLK brought black and white together.

3. I chose Obama in large part because I will not vote for anyone in the
primary who voted for the IWR. That didn't leave me with many options. I researched his positions extensively, and found that I agree with more than I disagree with. And I have to note that to me the most "cultish" supporters here and on kos are the Edwards supporters. Just this morning I saw an Edwards supporter describe his candidate as "flawless". And the vast majority of the adulation threads on kos are Edwards threads.

6. Yes, and don't forget that Edwards is the second coming of FDR.
The way this question is being framed seems kind of similar to "Have you stopped beating your wife?".

7. Same rule with me. So, I'm voting Gravel
I think it's a good rule to go by issues rather than people, I agree with you, Obama is best of the 3 on this - but there are things that prevent me from giving him my primary vote.

4. that is why the Reich Wing media is hammering britney stuff all the time, to keep that hysteria
associated with their chosen presidential candidates... to keep people from hearing Edwards message that Insurance for everybody can be paid for with W's tax cut for the Richest 4%...

you are being played by the ReTgugs

5. Why do you think that it's only Obama supporters?
I'm sure that there are such elements among the Obama supporters, but I am equally sure that the same thing exists among Edwards and Hillary supporters. I doubt that it's any more significant among any one group more than the others.

I know that it's a meme that's being pushed very hard by a few people here on DU. I used to get the exact same crap 4 years ago when I was supporting Clark.

8. It's the nature of the crowds...
Maybe it's just because Obama is so inspiring?

10. Okay, fair enough.
I haven't been to any rallies for Obama or anybody else, and I currently don't have a TV, so I'm not really in a position to judge how his crowds compare with those of the other candidates.

9. I supported a candidate I drafted in 2004 - because he reflected my views
about 99%. The one percent missing was the burning flag statement (he'd sign if bill offered). I decided it wasn't a deal breaker. But much as I admired him and invested effort i his campaign, I constantly checked myself, asking myself what would be a deal breaker.
When he endorsed Hillary - we parted ways - although I still respect him.

I think it's cult of personality when you defend the indefensible because your guy does it.

12. Everyone sees themselves as not part of a cult of personality
And sees everyone who supports a different candidate as a cult of personality.

Just the way you do in your OP :hi:

13. as my friend tells me, I am part of a "cult of personality" that tries to ignore such things...
We cancelled our newspaper, cut off our cable, and focus on positive things and our relationship. We garden. We make things for people. We try not to get caught up in all of this irrelevant crap. So, our cult is the cult of those who have largely withdrawn.

14. Is support for Hillary a "cult of lack of personality"?
Your notion is silly.

People like Obama because of his background, his vision, his record and yes, his personality. Is it a cult? If you say so.

16. I'm affected ... it sickens me to see how people lose themselves in these cults
It's as if they have no identity of their own.

I'm so discouraged by everything these days, and feel increasingly resigned about our political system. If you're an optimist, please explain how you do this.
