Original message
A John Edwards thread, by a John Edwards supporter, for John Edwards supporters.
I'm as disappointed as everyone about Nevada, and I'm still holding out hope for John Edwards to do better in more congenial territory, and ultimately trade the delegates he does get for something nice and shiny, or become the compromise choice at the convention.

Nonetheless, I'm proud of John Edwards, and I'm proud of us. The progressive movement managed to call back a man who was once the DLC's rising star to his progressive roots, and the presence of John Edwards had a huge impact on this race. A viable candidate who was proud to be liberal, progressive, on the left...whatever you want to call it, this was such a relief from the candidates who treated us like an embarrassment to be hidden even as they took our money and our time.

John Edwards has been everything we asked of him, and with any other candidate field, he would have run away with it. It's no shame that he's struggling against strong candidates like Obama and Clinton. The next step is to keep hoping for John Edwards to make a strong impact on the race, whatever that turns out to be. Then we take a step back and reflect on how far we have come, how much we have to build on, and get to it.

Remember John Edwards, remember his message, and expect nothing less from any future candidate who is asking for our support. This is only the beginning.

2. Yeah! Still a long way to go.
Edwards is no quitter. I am sticking with him until the end, and further. We can ask no less of ourselves than to stand up for those who stand up for us.

4. Exactly. If any future candidate wants the same action,
they have to be proud of us, and be strong advocates for our causes, before they get in the door. We don't have to prove our value to anyone.

5. Well, if you all don't mind, I won't be donating to another Democratic
candidate. This system really stinks, expecting desperate people who don't have any expendable money to give to a campaign that was never going to be given a chance, when corporations are better funded and find hundreds of ways to make up for the expense if their candidate loses.

35. I'm not voting for Obama or Hillary.
A vote for Obama or Hillary is a vote for the corporate machine that is trying to shut Edwards out of the race. I don't pay their cable fees and I won't vote for their candidates.

38. When they call for donations I already have my explanation.
He of she may get my vote, but I'm too entrenched in a hornet's nest of good ole boy activity, and since neither Obama or Clinton will push policies to clean up the corruption in our country, and in fact, will probably aid the evil doers, I need to keep my money to fight my own lonely battle.

6. Agree with your analysis, Heaven and Earth...
These isolated early state caucuses and primaries have lent themselves to the fiction of a 'two candidates' race. Feb 5th - Super Tuesday might be a better indication of support for the individual candidates as the venue is too large for the 'media circus' with it's varied agendas to have as much influence.

Edwards has promised to stay in the race - and he probably will do so at least through Feb 5th. There was evidence that he 'get's' what is going on, especially in his speech to the Carpenter's Union in California. California is a very progressive state, and if the focus on the 'two 200 Million' candidates is not dominating the message, he can expect to do better there, especially.

In retrospect, Iowa may have been about an 'anti-Hillary' sentiment, and New Hampshire a 'hey, wait a minute', and Nevada an 'anti-Obama' sentiment. With all this now out of the way - and the 'two front runners' now perceived as candidates who are not 'inevitable' - maybe the sentiment of the voters will swing back to a view of each candidate and their actual messages and positions on issues.

There are plenty of progressives who do not want Edwards to go away.

9. One of the interesting things I saw,
Edited on Sat Jan-19-08 04:51 PM by Heaven and Earth
was that in the Nevada exit polls, it went Change/Experience/Cares about people like me. My hypothesis is that the American people were so shocked to have a candidate who cared about them more than the lobbyists or the media, that they had trouble bringing themselves to believe it could be real. I hope they start believing soon, but in any case, by next time, they will believe.

to add my voice-

This race isn't over by a long shot.

John Edwards would make an EXCELLENT president.

Try not to be discouraged, from what I understand about "caucus'" they are not a very good measure of the popular vote, and don't operate well with so many candidates.

Be Strong!!!

I've already caucused for him in Iowa, so he already has the vote support, but every other kind of support I can give him in this primary is his until he tells me otherwise.

28. The "Loony Left" comes right out of the DLC
The DLC has put us into a corner and think we are insignificant. I guess dollars to dollars WE have been SHUT OUT of the Democratic Party.

The progressives have been marginalized by the DLC. They are the problem WITHIN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.

The DLC gave strong support for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Prior to the war, Will Marshall co-signed a letter to President Bush from the Project for the New American Century endorsing military action against Saddam Hussein.
During the 2004 Primary campaign the DLC attacked Presidential candidate Howard Dean as an out-of-touch liberal because of Dean's anti-war stance. The DLC dismissed other critics of the Iraq invasion such as filmmaker Michael Moore as members of the "loony left."

Even as domestic support for the Iraq War plummeted in 2004 and 2005, Marshall reprised his right-wing credentials and called upon Democrats to balance their criticism of Bush's handling of the Iraq War with praise for the President's achievements and cautioned "Democrats need to be choosier about the political company they keep, distancing themselves from the pacifist and anti-American fringe."

These are the people who have highjacked OUR PARTY.

I think we should infiltrate the DLC. For a $50 membership fee we too can join their little party and force them back to the GrassRoots of the Democratic Party.

the media is over-hyping these primaries. Can anyone recall such minute by minute on the scene reporting of primaries by the MSM before? Hell no.

They are working overtime to choose the next Dem candidate.

19. I'm incredulous that he only got such a small percentage of the vote.
How could that be? Even the most right-wing polls had him higher than that. I figured he would get at least 15% to 20%. What's up with that?

As far as I'm concerned the other two don't even begin to measure uo to J.E.! I will put off voting for a different flavor of the machine, and a bunch of hype and empty words for as long as I can. If John shifts his battle plan, as it appeards he has begun to do, then who knows how that could change things. And, we don't know what else could happen to put the others in a bad light.

We win every day that he stays in the race. It's hard not to feel letdown when you aren't getting the instant gratification we've all come to crave. But this isn't a sprint-it's a marathon. Front-runners in marathons stumble all the time and a whole host of other things can happen.

I just want him to stay in until the convention. That's why I'll keep donating and posting and pushing and prodding. I want John and Elizabeth to keep fighting. I want then to get their message out to more people in more states. Mostly, I want them to know that we are fighters, too, and that we are in it for the long haul.

34. I'm still supporting Edwards.
He is the only person in this campaign who has been able to keep the focus on progressive issues. It is absolutely vital that he stay in and fight for us. I do not live in an upper middle-class neighborhood. I live about five miles from downtown Los Angeles. It's a great neighborhood, but Hiilary and Obama do not speak for the people here. Edwards is the only one who talks about the issues that matter here.
