Barring a miracle, one year from today we will be hearing "President McCain"
The only Democrats who can beat him in the general election are either 1) not running or 2) running too far behind to be nominated.

And that's how that works out.

58. I'm starting to see it this way too!
It wasn't too long ago the media was disgustingly biased towards the right, and we're supposed to believe that just now, all of a sudden, they want to be somewhat fair and balanced.

We're being played.

2. I could give you an argument...
If 'we' had gotten a handle on the vote-stealing machines and organizations behind them.

The way it is now, 'they' will decide for us who the next president will be.

Can't argue this one.

17. Bullshit.
Either Obama or Hillary takes this election easily.

You think the economy will be better?
Will the war be over?
Will Bush become a good president?

This is as easy of a win for the Democratic party as 1980 was for the Republicans.

You think America will vote for a woman or a black man for president? You're seven miles past goofy if you believe that. Jesusfuckingchrist, even my Democratic friends around here won't support either of them. Not sure how to break this to you, but DU is a TEENY TINY MICROCOSM of the electorate, and a small portion of that as well. The unhappy truth is there is no pony under all that horseshit.

36. I don't base that on DU
Hell, DU is it's own separate bizarro world that thinks people would elect Kucinich if he only had more media coverage and one more debate appearance.

Yes, I do think people will vote for a woman and, as long as Obama doesn't come across as focusing on only racial issues, yes, even a black man.

This is not a normal election. In an average election, you may be right, but in this case the Republicans have so royally screwed up the country, even a woman or black man will win easily.

Gore and Kerry carried Orange County... The mayor of Orlando is a Democrat... The Chief Of Police is an African American... We have anti-discrimination against gay ordinances... We might not be Los Angeles or Seattle but we are a progressive city...Even in uber affluent Winter Park I saw as many Kerry lawn signs as I saw Bush lawn signs in 04...

A Dem that comes off as non-scary can win it... All he or she has to do is kick ass in South Florida, win marginally in Central Florida, and avoid being shut out in North Florida...

The media and the "powers that be" have decided who we will be allowed to vote for and a Democratic winner doesn't seem to be in the mix. And underestimating him is a BIG mistake. We should wake up NOW (though it won't happen) and select a winning candidate. Personally, I think a McCain-Biden race would be a classic (especially when discussing the Iraq War).

you are right, do not underestimate him.
However it has been mostly independents voting for him, his "maverick" style doesn't set well with his base.
He has a lot of reaching out to do in his own party.
Adding Biden or Liberman would not be in his political best interests.

On the same note, I doubt Clinton and Obama will team up.

41. That's why, when Hillary wins, it will be such a breakout moment
It will reset everyone's expectations of the American political system, hopefully along more progressive lines.

You'll get there Karl. I sense you're confronting your insecurity - about a woman, or maybe specifically a Hillary - line of resistance within yourself before you reset your expectations.

Democrats are just now beginning to do it as the reality of Hillary's nomination begins to take hold. I think it's probably good that she's had to fight and win against both Obama and Edwards, than if she had just been anointed the Dem candidate. That would have left everyone unsure of how real it is. The way I see this Dem nomination campaign is Hillary beating the best two other candidates in the entire race; the Publicans being the bottom of the candidate barrel. This gives her credibility now.

The rest of the country will get there in about a year.

46. The lack of optimism -- which is quite reasonable for Dems now -- is amazing.
The Republican party is in a shambles right now. They're dispirited, divided, and no matter who wins the Republican nomination, be it McCain or anyone else, not one of their candidates has very solid support across the spectrum of Republican voters.

Anyone who takes seriously these polls being taken months in advance of November about which candidate beats which other candidate hasn't been paying much attention to how well polling has been doing lately. Even the polls taken days before given elections haven't faired too well sometimes, and the polls taken months or even weeks in advance have swung around and shifted so much as to be nearly meaningless.

The thirst for change is enormous (and yes, even Hillary counts as a lot of change if you take off your DU blinders for a moment and think about the average voter out in the real world), and I expect Republican voter turnout to be very low -- I sincerly doubt that even the anti-Hillary hatred so many of you fear would likely be strong enough a motivational factor to, say, make evangelicals fiercely supportive of McCain or Romney, or business conservatives eager for Huckabee.

61. Well, yes....
People (I'm talking morning DJ types) do John McCain skits where the McCain impersonator is speaking and then suddenly has some kind of Vietnam flashback. "All in good fun, of course." This is nothing new.

Now, there are websites attempting to smear his name in a half-assed swiftboating attempt.

Biggest knocks will be his record on social issues other than abortion (despite his staunch anti-abortion rights stance, he is pretty well loathed by evangelicals), and his age (he'll be Reagan's age, but without Reagan's brilliant speaking skills).

56. *Sigh* If I only had the Xanax concession here, I'd be rich
1) Karl, calm down, take a breath.

2) Take heart, Chuck Norris just told the world that McCain is too old to be President. http://www.yahoo.com/s/787873

3) Forget, for a moment, what polls a year out are saying and look at who is showing up to vote in these primaries. Dems are showing up 2 to 1 to Republicans. That's a really good sign.

4) McCain hasn't one yet (although SC was a big step). Romney will do well in the Heartland, and we have not heard the last of Mr. Huckabee. The right wing media is lukewarm on McCain, at best, and there is no sign that evangelicals will turn out in droves to support the man. Their logic may well be "Let that get elected -- America will see what kind of anti-Christian, flag-burning, ACLU loving, Toby Keith hating, anti-gun, anti-NASCAR, anti-Larry-the-Cable-Guy President is and we'll win congress and the White House back before you can say Ted Nugent!"

5) We only see our problems right now; take a look at what's going on in Republicanland -- it's a scream, it'll do your heart good. They hate all of their potential nominees for one damn reason or another.

66. We won't have that problem...
McCain would be the toughest candidate to beat but the Christian Right, and the Grover Norquist brigade loathe him. The anti-McCain candidate will soon rear its head. I believe Mitt Romney will be that man. It seems that the Bush Brigade are supporting Romney. Certainly Jeb is in Florida.

In November it will be Romney v Clinton.

John McCain can then take Mark Salter and write another bestselling book, explaining how he was yet again unfairly ambushed and smeared by the Bush team, and he will have a new sob story to replace South Carolina 2000.

Some people never learn.

67. I disagree
It will be pResident Mittens. You forget that the Chamber of Commerce hasn't completely weighed in yet. McCain is handy in the south to help slap down huckelberry, then he will no longer be useful.

74. We'll kick McCain's worthless warmongering fanny from here to Hong Kong.
He looks and sounds exhausted.

He hasn't even won their nomination yet either.

In a related story, the Giants whipped the Packers yesterday in sub-zero temps. At Lambeau.

76. I think your wrong. The dems. just need not be afraid of beating Sen. McCain
over the head with the Iraq war and the many dead civilians and Brave soldiers in this illegal war..... Just keep beating that drum and you win.... unless our nominee is Hillery...
