As for the Defense of Marriage Act, Hillary has defended her support of it. The country was very close to making marriage between a man and a woman only, a constitutional amendment. The passing of DOMA was a strategy to get the supporters of a constitutional amendment to back down and support a law which could more easily be changed in the future. DOMA also leaves the recognition of gay marriage as a matter of the states. It was the best that could be done at the time. It shows that Clinton's ability to strategize to prevent a worst case scenario from becoming reality.
