we'd be making real progress.

7. Do you really think that John Edwards got less than 4% of the Nevada vote
and is just barely breaking into the double digits in South Carolina because he's not on the Nightly News each night?

What seems to get lost here is that, when a primary is in full swing in a state, the voters are not likely to get much of their information about their local primary by watching network or cable news - the candidates are campaigning right in their back yards and they're all getting PLENTY of local media attention, both print and television. I've worked primary campaigns and found the last thing that local voters are interested in or influenced by in the weeks leading up to the election is what the national media is saying about the candidates. They spend quite a bit of their time going to campaign events, town meetings and local house gatherings, they read the local papers (which are saturated with coverage of ALL the candidates) and watch their local news (if only to try to catch themselves or their neighbors onscreen).

John Edwards is not doing poorly because CNN and NBC Nightly News aren't giving him enough coverage. He's doing poorly because, for some reason, his message is not resonating on the ground with voters.

8. Newsflash
Media coverage and advertising play a huge part in a campaign and directly influence a candidate's success. (And Edwards didn't advertise in Nevada, in case you didn't know.)

As for the media's coverage of Edwards, you might find this article enlightening...it's even got pictures so it will be easy for you to understand.

15. One word: Giuliani
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 10:20 AM by EffieBlack
Primary voters are not as stupid as you seem to think they are. You don't seem to believe that you and other Edwards supporters have been fooled by the media - you've managed to learn all about him and fully support him, regardless what you've heard or haven't heard in the media. Why do you assume that the supporters of other candidates are more ignorant or easily manipulated than you are?

John Edwards is not an unknown quantity. Voters, at least so far, just aren't that in to him.

19. Yeah, Giuliani who won't stop saying 9/11 to the point it's turning off repukes...
Giuliani who had his frickin mistress living with him and his family.

Giuliani who had the people of NY pay for security for his trysts with said mistress.

So much for your logic.

21. So you agree that plenty of coverage doesn't guarantee success
Lots of people here think that Obama and Clinton are spawns of the devil. Yet, they also claim that they're beating Edwards because they're getting more coverage than he is.

But if your argument held water, that would mean that - just like Giuliani - Obama and Clinton would also be tanking in the polls, given the baggage they supposedly carry.

You've proven my point. Thank you.

22. Heh. No.
What I'm saying is that the republican base is much more turned off by Giuliani than any Dem is by any of our candidates.

23. The issue is media coverage
You have failed to acknowledge that Edwards receives considerably less media coverage as detailed in the above link. Where you came up with "One word: Giuliani" or how it applies to the discussion remains a mystery and your attempt to segue and create a strawman appears intellectually dishonest.

BTW - I haven't been "fooled" by anyone and it's presumptuous for you to come to that conclusion.

25. I agree that Edwards has received less media coverage
But that does not mean that is the reason that he is not winning primaries.

Even with less coverage, you are supporting him. Are Edwards supporters different than anyone else? If you decided to support him, even though you haven't seen him on television as much as Obama and Clinton, why would you assume that people who have decided not to support him have done so because they haven't seen him on television enough.

29. We on DU are political junkies
The majority of Americans are not and they get their daily dose of politics from the evening news. To think otherwise is just foolish.

30. I haven't found people on DU to be
any smarter, better informed or more politically savvy than people who do not spend an enormous amount of time sitting at their computers arguing about politics.with strangers. In fact, I find many people here considerably less knowledgeable than those who wouldn't even think participating in an online political discussion.

Frankly, your assumption that people who are not. On DU or are not "political junkies" are somehow more susceptible to being manipulated and less informed than you are is extremely arrogant.

For your information, there are plenty of intelligent, well-informed non-"political junkies" who have decided to not support John Edwards and not because they don't know any better.

32. In my experience interacting with people of all ages, races, socioeconomic backgrounds...
etc., etc., the majority still do not get news online (beyond the Yahoo! home page). I've found that for real news, there are still many above age 30 who don't go beyond MSM; even those under 30 are online more for social networking than information gathering.

I think people know OF Edwards (just as they know OF Dennis Kucinich, though the "he's the UFO guy" sadly is what sticks in the mind of most); beyond that, they'd have to do some digging, just as we have done for all the candidates to get as much information as possible. The average person, regardless of income, simply does not do that. There are no doubt many reasons why they don't. It's not a judgment; simply a fact.

MSM still sets the tone for these contests. They can certainly be wrong, but we've watched time and again how they at least try to manipulate outcomes, unfortunately, often against our interests.

I absolutely believe those who regularly frequent DU - prior to the primary season - are more informed than the average citizen (about politics, at least). That's my primary point in responding here.

Unless they settle the WGA strike. He won't cross the picket line. Same goes for Leno, O'Brien, Kimmel, etc.
