13. Hillary is supporting Energy Research..
Obama is a sponsor of a "Coal to Liquid Fuel Promotion Act of 2007". Which is another reason I find him untrustworthy. He mentions reducing of low-carbon non-petroleum fuels. The standard requires fuels suppliers to reduce the carbon their fuel emits by ten percent by 2020. But heres the rub, it can't be done. Scientists have been working on Carbon sequestration for 100 yrs and cannot come up with a viable/cost effective method that would be safe for daily use. IOW, allowing this bill to be passed is nothing more than a huge "pork barrel" allocation for coal industries and their supporters. Never mind, if Obama, as president, relaxes the standards for emissions as said in the clever wording of his site, it would not only be a disaster to the environment but cause irreparable harm to the World.

Here's what Barack Obama has to say about global warming on his website:

"We need to take steps to stop catastrophic, man-made climate change. If we do not act, the consequences will be devastating for future generations, especially for the poorest global populations. Al Gore couldn't have put it better."

So why did Obama introduce the "Coal-to-Liquid Fuel Promotion Act of 2007," a bill that would promote the use of coal, the dirtiest of all fossil fuels, as a transportation fuel and make global warming a lot worse?

There's a clue in the fact that the other champions of coal-to-liquid fuels in the U.S. Senate are Jim Bunning of Kentucky and Larry Craig of Wyoming, both Republicans.

Yes, Illinois, Obama's home state, is, like Kentucky and Wyoming, a major coal-producing state. Nearly 32 million tons of coal was mined in Illinois in 2005, generating nearly $1 billion in revenues for the state's producers.

Big coal companies and their allies in the United Mine Workers union want us to fill our gas tanks and airplane jet engines with a liquid fuel made from coal, which is abundant in the U.S. They call it a step towards energy independence. Peabody Energy, the nation's largest coal company, which is based in St. Louis, is a big backer of coal-to-liquid tech.

When Obama introduced the coal-to-liquids bill back in January, he drew catcalls from environmentalists. Frank O'Donnell, the executive director of a Washington group called the Clean Air Watch, told Grist's Amanda Griscom Little: "Obama may be a climate crusader, but in this case he's marching in the wrong direction."

Now, as his presidential campaign gathers momentum, Obama's position will get more unwelcome attention. Along with other coal-state lawmakers, including two powerful House Democrats from Virginia, Nick Rahall and Rick Boucher, Obama backs massive federal subsidies for coal as a so-called alternative fuel.

2. Tonight has the potential to be a firestorm

Hopefully Obama will get off his ass and actually speak or else the wimp thing is going to stick.

I hope he's prepared because i think Hillary is going to take him on fullsteam.

17. I'm looking forward to him justifying the 'Coal to Liquid Bill' he sponsored.
It will be interesting to hear how much BS will get flung to cover his buttocks.

4. Here might help:
"Supports coal-to-liquid fuels if they emit 20 percent less carbon over their lifecycle than conventional fuels. On June 19, 2007, voted in favor of an amendment that would provide loans for coal projects, including liquefied coal; the amendment did not pass."

11. Welcome, it looks like to me she is looking for clean energy and for us to be able
to move to it in a way that it doesn't devastate the coal industry all at once. You have a lot of people dependent on it in one way or another, jobs, etc. I think she is trying to move away from it in a gradual manner.

15. the abandoning of coal in one fell swoop
would devastate a lot of communities and families. The responsible thing to do is what she's apparently doing: find a way to introduce alternative energies while helping those who make their living off coal adjust in a way where they can take part.

18. Theres no such thing.. Coal should be abandoned for Clean Energy..
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 09:54 AM by Tellurian
Hillary's quote.."IF they can meet the 20% Standard" is the key element in her quote. Coal does not meet the standard as is.. See post #13 for more info..

8. Oh, they'll decide to dis-invite him
just like they did Kucinich. You know, he hasn't won a primary, etc, etc, never bringing up the fact that Edwards will tell the truth about corporations.

their requirement was 5% in the polls, as I understand it. But we'll find out in a few hours, I guess.

Are you going on record as saying Edwards will not be there tonight?

19. Could be wrong but, I don't think Hillary is a advocate of coal or NP.
She's against Yucca Mt. (Obama voted for it) and for renewable energy
and future job growth in green energy research, solar and wind power etc. I wouldn't say she was a coal advocate unless you that for a fact. Stop spreading rumors.

20. I can understand that , North Carolina has N..station
As far as I know we have never had problems with Nuk. station, in fact the one company near me is well liked, when they first started they took boys form high schools in the area and trained them and taught them as same as if they were in a reg.College, I would think that this company would have enough trained young men to send all over the U.S...Again as far as I know we have never had any problems...They took the most intelligent kids from the high school to train, kids that could have gone to the University of North Carolina, Wake Forrest or Duke.
