Obama Gets Backing of King's Inner Circle, With Some Exceptions

By Julianna Goldman

Jan. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama spoke yesterday at the church once pastored by Martin Luther King Jr., matching the soaring chords of the choir with a speech that was part sermon, part call to action.

<...>

As the first black presidential candidate to win broad support among both blacks and whites, Obama, 46, has the backing of most of the civil rights activists who worked with King. They view him as the embodiment of King's vision of a society in which race counts less than character.

``In the 40th year that Martin King died, America is beginning to see the light beyond race for leadership,'' said Joseph Lowery, 86, co-founder with King of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. ``I wish Martin could have lived to see that day and maybe he is somehow aware of what's happening.''

Rifts

At the same time, though, the Illinois senator's candidacy has exposed rifts in the civil-rights establishment.

While veterans of the SCLC such as such as C.T. Vivian, Wyatt Tee Walker, Dorothy Cotton and Jesse Jackson are backing Obama, others, including Georgia Representative John Lewis and former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young, continue to support his rival for the Democratic nomination, Senator Hillary Clinton of New York.

<...>

Young, 75, said he has a personal friendship with Hillary Clinton that goes back more than 30 years to when his first wife worked with her on children's issues.

8. Swiftboating? Who was implying that Obama shares Mclurkin's positions
and beliefs.

That's the real swiftboating that has been going on. Trying to paint Obama as intolerant aor discriminatory because someone sang at an event he wasn't even attending.

9. The reason I won't vote for Hillary is because I believe her judgement is flawed
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 10:19 AM by still_one
I believe her votes on the IWR and the Kyle Lieberman amendment show that lack of judgment.

The use of Bill Clinton in her campaign is a double edge sword. Most people do not realize the deregulation he pushed through during his administration, has hurt us in a big way. The telcommunication act of the 90's allowed for mega merges of media outlets, and the elimination of the fairness doctrine, which has effectively led to corporate censorship of news. The deregulation of the banking industry, along with energy, and NAFTA hurt many people which was not realized at the time

Most of the above issues had been pushed by the republicans for years, and the Clinton administrtion helped make those issues a reality

We are paying for the consequences of those actions today. Those actions allowed subsequent administrations to further the course of their agenda

10. I think the pictures are offensive
Considering McClurkin wasn't spouting his ex-gay reformation at the time he appeared with Clinton, I don't think it's right to use those pictures. It's a slap in the face to our gay DUers and the same kind of distortion that Clinton is criticized for engaging in.

14. Really?
Then I apologize. When I saw those pictures I actually thought he looked older than 1992, and the tie color wasn't right for 1992, but decided it was just a bad photographer. I should trust myself more! Thanks for digging that up, not that I expect there to be any honesty on the issue because it's always been about the GLBT community loving Hillary.
