Oh Boy, Things Are Getting Nasty - Elected Official (Hillary Supporter) Claims Obama 'Anti-Semite'
The presidential primary turned nasty last week as two top Huntington Democratic officials clashed over allegations of anti-Semitism. Suffolk Legis. Jon Cooper (D-Lloyd Harbor), a supporter of Barack Obama, said Huntington town board member Susan Berland heckled him while he spoke on behalf of the Illinois senator, and approached him later, asking, "How can you support Obama? He is an anti-Semite."

Cooper, who like Berland is Jewish, said her claims about Obama were untrue and she should apologize. The exchange occurred Tuesday night at a Huntington Democratic Committee meeting attended by more than 100 at the American Legion Hall in Halesite. When first contacted, Berland, a supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton, declined to comment and charged that Cooper cursed at her husband, baited her and bashed Clinton - which Cooper denied. Later, she acknowledged making the anti-Semitism charge - and apologized to Cooper and Obama for her "inappropriate remark."

Berland explained she'd read a published report earlier Tuesday that a magazine from Obama's Chicago church gave an award last year to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Obama later condemned Farrakhan's anti-Semitic statements and disagreed with the award.

1. This will be the theme of the day with Clinton supporters trying to scream
"Homophobe" louder than Obama supporters can scream "They accused Obama of Anti-semitism".

8. i've seen it on DU. People act like asses then apologise. People accept the apology
and move on.

I guess it can happen in the real world too.

Go figure.

I like your posts. You support Obama and you do your candidate proud.

So don't fucking go there. You'll lose.

10. she heckeld Cooper while he was speaking
and later questioned why he would support an "anti-semite"

and she is an elected official who is supporting the Clinton campaign, which means when Clinton campaigns in New York, she will no doubt be showing up at events.

It's news because it speaks to what tactics Clinton people will go to in order to smear Obama. Whatever works. Long Island has a heavy Jewish population, I have no doubt that little meme will be making the rounds soon, if they haven't already.

18. yes, slings go both ways, of course
but there's different degrees. The slurs I've seen at Clinton are of a much different variety than the one's directed at Obama.

I'd prefer not to see either, but I'd much prefer my candidate being hit over things like positions on the war, rather than charges of being an anti-semite or homophobe.

27. You people calling her a racist, saying she can't do anything without her man,
Which is sexist. Saying that she wouldn't be anywhere without Bill as if a smart woman can't accend to the Presidency without a man's name or help.

They have been insulting her looks, calling her fat...

And you are saying that doesn't equate to the bullshit said about Obama? COME ON.

You have to see that the shit is fucked up equally on both sides for each. Don't let your 'love' for Obama cloud your objectivity. They are both breaking ground and they are both getting beat the fuck up for it.

They have both been shit on by their opponents supporters and the MSM something fierce. Though the MSM has been fucking with Hillary a lot longer and a lot stronger. Think about what Chris Matthews said about her ON AIR and didn't think he was wrong and didn't think he needed to apologise.

For god sakes, there are billboards put up by republicans saying STOP HILLARY all over the fucking country.

Are you still thinking she's getting it in a lesser fashion than Obama?

Come on. Be objective.

28. I guess I'm looking at it differently
I ignore the stuff like racist charges because it's absurd. And the fat jokes - well, I mean come on, that's just silly. I don't think the people making those charges even believe them.

The whole topic of whether she would get there without help from her husband, though, I think is fair game. We've never had a situation like this in American history before, and I think it's foolish to just dismiss the idea that Bill helped her get where she is just because it doesn't seem very feminist. We've never had a woman get to this point in politics before - but we've also never had a former first lady run for president before either.

So it's impossible to tell how much is based off of her own skill and intellect and hard work - and how much is based off her husband.

THAT, itself, is fair game for discussion, IMO.

Other things, though, I agree, are bullshit.

But I was only speaking of attacks on DU, not in the mainstream media or by republicans.

Didn't he ask his over zealous supporters to cut it out?

Which I applauded him for.

Come on. COME THE FUCK ON.

Here is part of what he said

Obama said he wants to send "a strong signal to my own supporters that let’s try to focus on the work that needs to get done. If I hear my own supporters engaging in talk that I think is ungenerous or misleading or unfair, I will speak out forcefully against it....

29. here
The connection has thrown a spotlight on some of Wright's more controversial remarks in a church that advertises itself as "unashamedly Black and unapologetically Christian" - at times espousing a black liberation theology that can sound as exclusionary as Obama's message is inclusionary. He has also equated Zionism with racism.

51. "and approached him later..."
This is deplorable, but this was personal. I am long past any illusion that all people who get elected to political positions are somehow free of personal prejudices. I remember when Wes Clark was getting attacked for being an anti-semite when he made a comment to Huffington about New York money being raised to support a right wing position in Israel about the need for war with Iran. That happened openly, nationally, and intentionally in print. That was not just a heated exchange between two individuals that revealed the misinformation or prejudice of one of them. In this case Berland later apologized for her words.

If this board ever descends into globalizing the comments of every individual who supports one or another candidate into something that always represents the official position or intent of that candidate's campaign we might as well hand out the machetes now.
