Clinton Misses MLK March in South Carolina
Share January 21, 2008 10:36 AM

ABC News' Kate Snow and Sunlen Miller Report:
Senator Barack Obama just marched through the streets of Columbia, S.C. with hundreds of people around him.

It was quite a scene - a crush of media, people screaming his name, kids and adults straining to see the Democratic senator from Illinois, shouts of "fired up! Ready to go!"

One sign near the front of the march read "no Clinton dynasty".

Senator Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., had been scheduled to march as well but, much to the delight of Obama staffers, her flight was delayed. She missed the march.

She is scheduled to speak at an event honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. now underway at the Capitol, as is Obama and Senator John Edwards, D-N.C.

But the visual that will be all over local newscasts on this MLK holiday, is one of a joyous Obama, smiling, marching with throngs of supporters - and not a Clinton in sight.

1. So another words...
It was not her fault that she missed the march. Her flight was delayed. And just like you wrote who was happy the Obama staffers. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Yep those staffers don't want her to be around because it would take some of Obams thunder from him.

44. this article, as the case usually goes with coverage of Hillary...
..from the start tries to make her look bad, as if she did that on purpose...and like a third paragraph in, finally gets to "flight was delayed"...

5. hmm. are you talking about the "no dynasty" sign?
Where do you get that the sign was part of his campaign, and not someone simply exercising their 1st Amendment rights during a march on public property? Please tell me you don't think first amendment rights should be shut down in such a situation.

10. if the sign was next to Obama -- which some reports suggest --
and he's unaware of it, he needs better campaign staff. That's an unnecessary problem just waiting to happen, putting the campaign on defense which is not where they want to be.

18. I haven't seen any report but this one- and all it says in that the
sign was near the front of the march. Furthermore, campaign staff can't head off every dumb supporter. And for all we know, the staff did ask the supporter to cool it. We just don't know what went on here. In any case, I don't see that this is a big deal- at all.

However, the person with that sign was not deterred by the Secret Service/Security detail. The sign holder had to be an Obama insider.

7. and Obama will win SC solely because of the Black Vote
but will continue to stumble everywhere else. Let him enjoy his little moment in the sun, okay?

It's probably all downhill from here as most of the other voting groups -- women, hispanics, latinos, older voters, Democrats, as well as some of the black vote -- continue to vote for Hillary state-after-state, primary-after-primary.

24. he won 80% of the african-american vote in NV
but lost nearly every other group (hispanics, latinos, women, Democrats, younger) and now the media is expecting him to do well in SC because of the strong african-american community -- comprising nearly half of Democrat voters -- in the State.

Not surprising an Obama supporter would cry racism when I'm just stating facts and voting patterns based on previous races.

Obama will need to step up his inroads into other voting communities and I'm not sure he can do it in the time he has left before Super Tuesday. I think you're aware of this and are afraid of his chances, ergo you want to ban the messenger.

What exactly is the distinction between hispanics and latinos? That's twice that you've listed them as separate groups.

Also, what is your source for the claim that Obama lost among younger voters? The breakouts I saw gave him the lead in that demographic.

82. Where was the black vote in Iowa?
Seriously...keep believing the media hype. Most of his campaign workers are white or non black. At the convention center yesterday in SC, almost half the people there were white or non black. I over heard many convos about Clinton/Bush dynasty fatigue. News reporters were interviewing people on camera about who they supported and they started looking for undecideds because most people they spoke with were Obama supporters of all races. Puh-lease. Unless you're here on the ground, you don't have a clue what's really going.

If you want to accuse Bill of lying you should be honest yourself and get rid of your signature line.

43. I don't see anything in my Original Post
that would merit such a ridiculous, angry, sarcastic response. If you can disprove his 80% black support in NV -- still lost the State, though -- or the media's expectations that he'll carry SC because of the strong african-american turnout they're anticipating, then fine, do.

I was just stating facts and mentioned nothing about them having the "right" to choose their own candidate or being "nasty black voters".

It appears as if you sadly have some issues you need to work through. I would suggest a trained therapist in a private space and not the public forum that is DU for that.

Wow, I'm surely glad that we are not really guilty of doing what all you Bam-Bam supporters claim we do. I wouldn't like us if we did that, either.

I hope you aren't offended by my nickname. I'm a little tired of hearing "Billary" everywhere, or "Clenis" so, I'm sorta evening the odds. I also like Pollybama, as I believe this really is indicative of his political inexperience. Bam-Bam is indicative of his youth. Honestly, I love them both, so will probably use them interchangeably. Gee, I love politics. Everyone, please feel free to use my nicknames.

" In New York, Hillary received a "standing ovation" at Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church where she spoke about the civil rights movement and economic justice. She also picked up the endorsement of the church’s pastor, Dr. Calvin Butts. "With the right experience comes change," he said. "I have seen first-hand the wisdom, insight and concern she brings in her approach to community development…and economic revitalization."".

46. Obama will do anything to galvanize the SC black vote behind him..
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 12:00 PM by Tellurian
Obama probably isn't even aware or maybe he is.. but wants to be elected more than doing the right thing for Blacks. How Reagan and the Republicans disenfranchised black's from attaining Civil Rights:

A few Facts about Reagan's (covert) view of Civil Rights for Blacks:

--Reagan opposed passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the law that barred segregation in public facilities and discrimination in education and hiring.

--When Reagan spoke these words, he actively opposed passage of the Open Housing Act, a measure that would bar discrimination in the sale and rental of housing. Indeed, his role in helping defeat a similar statewide measure in California in 1964 helped to launch him into politics.

--In 1980, he kicked off his presidential campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi, where in 1964 the local Klan killed three civil rights workers. Not only did Reagan not mention this event, he told his audience, "I believe in states' rights."

--As President, Reagan cut funding for civil rights enforcement and opposed a Martin Luther King holiday.

Several Articles regarding Reagan's destructive policies and how Reaganomics plunged the economy into a deep recession..Obama thinks the Republicans have had the greatest ideas over the last 10-15 yrs. Ask him what drugs he is on now?

49. interesting that you mention Housing in this Reagan Tidbit
as Obama's buddy Tony Rezko is widely known as a slum lord with properties in what was Obama's District considered health hazards and unsafe for anyone to live in. Needless to say, Obama did nothing about it as State Senator and still took tons of money from Rezko for his Senate Campaign.

56. You got it!
To be precise, Rezko said he didn't have the money to pay for the tenants "heat" during a bitter cold Chicago winter, but he had thousand to donate to Obama's campaign and fundraiser. Worse, Obama did NOTHING to get help for these people...'emergency heating assistance'... zero, zilch, nada.

While Obama was comfortable in his well heated home. The people in his district who elected him to the Senate, sat huddled in their freezing sub-standard apartments in one of the coldest Chicago winters in memory...receiving not an iota of help from Senator Obama.

He is not my kind of guy!

I dare say, Teddy Kennedy knowing this, would never affix his name to an endorsement of Obama.

39. She must have had a Goldwater Reunion Party to go to
Since she supported Goldwater, who was actively against Martin Luther King, it would be consistent with her "record".
