Edwards Cancels NAACP Speech On King Day After Rival Candidates Protest
NBC | January 21, 2008 10:51 AM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NBC/NJ's Tricia Miller says that Edwards was invited to speak at the NAACP celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Columbia yesterday, but he backed out of the speech after other campaigns complained that he was the only presidential candidate speaking, according to his campaign. He was not listed as a speaker in the church's bulletin for the service. "Sen. Edwards was expected to speak at the service today there was some anxiety and concern from the other campaigns that he was here and they were not. So, in an effort to make sure the service was focused on celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. King and nothing else, we decided to honor Dr. King today and speak about his legacy tomorrow," explained Edwards spokeswoman Teresa Wells.

During the service Edwards sat in the front row with Rep. Leon Howard, an Edwards endorser and chair of the South Carolina legislature's black caucus. He was recognized from the podium when all of the elected officials and candidates were individually pointed out.

3. That was really low of the Obama and Clinton Campaigns.John gets little enough notice as it is .

The NAACP has the right to invite whomever they choose to speak. It is none of their business. This is just mean spirited and catty jealousy. This is a perfect example of one of the many reasons why I would find it difficult to vote for either Obama or Clinton.

7. And Obama's speech from King's church is getting a LOT of play.
Which is fine -- and Edwards should've gotten to speak at the NAACP event.

My God, the state of America - looking at the "political camps" - makes me sick.

8. This says so much about the pettiness of Clinton and Obama.
Tacky doesn't even begin to describe it.

But they are both media whores, they'll take all they can get, and not mention how unfair it is to anyone else.

I might just have to sit this one out, I'm not sure I can vote for either of them.

9. I must say. That's pretty declasse and small.
It's not as if JRE is getting all the media attention, and they every have to fight for coverage.

25. Mistake by Edwards
John Edwards should have spoken. He has been relatively ignored by the media this entire election.... why would be try to be overly fair here? After all this "Coke vs. Pepsi" coverage by the media he shouldn't feel bad for taking advantage of this special speaking engagement.

I wish he hadn't backed down to the other two crybabies. Those two are going to turn voters off if they keep this up.
