ALL the candidates did MLK proud today in S.C.
They all complimented each other. They all talked about how how wonderful it is to see the diversity in the Democratic field. And I have to agree with them.

No matter how ugly it gets here, we are living history now.

1. Except Obama and Clinton protested Edwards speaking to the NAACP
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 03:58 PM by saracat
and he cancelled while they and their surrogtes gave high profile speeches elsewhere. They ought to be ashamed.

9. I would have concurred with you until Iread that piece.Do you think that was right?
I am sorry but I thought that was very mean spirited on the part of both those campaigns. It tarnished what woyuld have otherwise been a splendid day. Do you think those actions should be unremarked because this is a "nice thread" ? Should we pretend they never took place?

10. Well I just saw Edwards on TV
say very nice things about his competitors, so I guess he doesn't agree with you either.

But he's a nicer person than you are. And I can't stand him.

14. He is a nicer person. And he has more class than his competitors. He didn't ask them to step down.
I don't see why noticing this makes me "not nice" and I don't see why you think it is wrong to acknowledge it happened. It wasn't "nice' of the opposing campaigns to ask John not to speak while they kept their speech scheduales.

I must've missed that.

19. Don't link to another DU thread that I have to read through
to find another link. That's dumb.

Show me where either candidate asked Edwards to drop out.

20. Read Below
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/01/21/594989.aspx

Meanwhile, NBC/NJ’s Tricia Miller says that Edwards was invited to speak at the NAACP celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Columbia yesterday, but he backed out of the speech after other campaigns complained that he was the only presidential candidate speaking, according to his campaign. He was not listed as a speaker in the church's bulletin for the service. "Sen. Edwards was expected to speak at the service today there was some anxiety and concern from the other campaigns that he was here and they were not. So, in an effort to make sure the service was focused on celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. King and nothing else, we decided to honor Dr. King today and speak about his legacy tomorrow," explained Edwards spokeswoman Teresa Wells.

During the service Edwards sat in the front row with Rep. Leon Howard, an Edwards endorser and chair of the South Carolina legislature's black caucus. He was recognized from the podium when all of the elected officials and candidates were individually pointed out.

21. Ah
So Edwards chose not to speak at an event because other campaigns felt excluded? That makes no sense to me.

But whatever... it was Edwards' choice.

I thought you were saying other campaigns were asking Edwards to drop out of the race - not out of an event. Sorry for my misunderstanding.

3. If you all think MLK was a civil rights leader, you all mistaken!
MLK turned against the war in Vietnam and sided with the exploited working class in America. MLK was far more than a civil rights leader, he was a champion of the workers and a peace leader of international consequence and prestige.

Many of those that extolled MLK's virtues today are themselves guilty of opposing everything MLK stood for. They have supported wars of aggression abroad, suppression of civil liberties at home, and have looked the other way as Israel has continued her brutal and dehumanizing occupation of Palestinian lands.

5. Are you saying MLK wasn't a Civil Rights leader?
his opposition to the war was based on human rights.

But go ahead, shit on a nice thread. I don't know why I bother.

8. No, not usually
perhaps you have an expression problem.

"If you all think MLK was a civil rights leader, you all mistaken!"

So was he, or was he not, a civil rights leader?

12. I read that article earlier today
and I don't disagree with any of it.

If you're saying MLK wasn't ONLY a civil rights leader, say so.

If you're saying he wasn't a civil rights leader, say that.

I'm sick of this cryptic shit - not just from you. People think they can post little one-line responses and it's supposed to mean something.

But then, a lot of people think they need to post 12,000 words to make their point. How about a compromise? Make your point, and keep it short and sweet? That's how to encourage a meaningful discussion.

22. No
they all complimented each other and acknowledged the historicity of this race. I thought it was nice.

I should've known admiring something as simple as this would be controversial on DU.

Fuck y'all.
