Stephen King endorses Obama
SARASOTA, Fla., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Horror story writer Stephen King is throwing his support to Barack Obama, saying having a black U.S. president is what the country needs.

King told the Bangor (Maine) Daily News the United States needs "a big change."

"We've had enough Bush Republicanism to last the country for a long time," he said. "We're seeing a lot of chickens come home to roost because of Bush administration policies. You can't pump billions of dollars into a foreign war without it affecting the economy."

King, 60, said he found it "an amazing thing" to see the two front-runners be a woman and a black man, the Daily News reported Saturday. But, King said, he prefers Obama, the senator from Illinois, over Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.

"Obama has the least baggage of the two and is willing to try new things," he said. "It wouldn't be business as usual. Also it would do wonders for us in the world community to have a black man in the White House."

King's new novel, "Duma Key," is to hit bookstores Tuesday. It's the story of a construction worker who suffers the loss of his arm and memory after almost being killed by a crane at work.

1. Interesting.
I guess if it boils down to Clinton vs Obama, I agree with Mr. King.

12. In fairness, King has had a rep of being involved politically
unlike Clive Barker.

21. I am lucky
You can't imagine what a hands on direct democracy state this is. Unsurprising when you consider that only about 600,000 people live here. I've met both Leahy and Sanders several times in intimate settings. I used to work with my new reps daughter. All our state reps have their home phones listed in the state directory- including the speaker of the House and the Senate president. Small is beautiful.

20. I agree
Are Celebrity endorsements what we gun for these days rather than honest discussions of issues?

But who is to blame?

The people for not caring enough? Being an optimist I would say no.

The media for having a semi-permiable celeb-news membrane?

Or is it the media's fault because their owners and shareholders prefer a less than frank discussion of the issues and affairs of the day?

-The War? GE and Westinghouse make a lot on defence contracts, Newscorp and Time Warner make a lot more on delivering ratings than reason and blood sells.

-Healthcare? Maybe some spotty coverage, but they are rather busy beating up Michael Moore right now.

-Global Warming? A few hit pieces, but it is best to keep it out of the campaign.

31. King is a long-time political activist
And a very well-informed and articulate progressive - I saw him give a very moving speech when he was stumping for the Dems in Florida in the eighties. This endorsement strikes me as being a bit more relevant than most celebrity endorsements. Obama isn't my first choice, but congrats to the Obama supporters!
