Interesting thing happened at my voting center today.
I had to register & vote today (IL grace period for recently moved). First, I'd like to say that I was very proud to cast my votes with my little boy clinging to my side :)

Second - and here is where things get interesting...
The employees at the voter registration office were listening to AM720 Talk Radio. If you're from the Chicago area, you'll recognize that as the WGN Talk Radio Station. During the time I was in there, it was the Kathy & Judy show.

So what's coming through the radio, right next to all the voting booths? The hosts are talking about the Democratic Debate last night, and taking calls. 100% support of the Dems and then they provided their own analysis of the candidates, etc, etc. Now, I'm glad to hear this on the radio of course - but it still bothers me that it was being played in a polling center. Granted it was a workplace location (Dept of Voter Registration for our county), and there were cubicles, offices, etc... And despite my candidate of choice being discussed, along with the others, in good light - I just think it's wrong. There are signs everywhere stating no electioneering within 100 ft of the building. Yet inside, they're listening to essentially a progressive discussion and analysis of candidates. I even heard at one point where McCain & Romney have no chance against the top 3 Dems. Again, liking what I heard - just not where I heard it.

At one point I was going to say something to the woman at the counter that she might want to turn the station or turn it down. But there was a couple right there, and I didn't want to make a scene.

1. Go ahead make a scene. Ask her it the radio show classifies as electioneering
She might say it does not it is just current events.

3. Is that acceptable?
Just curious. I've read of people getting in trouble just for having stickers on their shirt in support of their candidate. What makes it okay to play a radio show in the voting area, where the only thing being discussed is the democratic candidates, and their ability to win.

Again - I agree with the conversation on the radio, that wasn't my concern. Just where it was being broadcast - it just seemed wrong. I live in Hastert's old district, so it very well could have been a conversation on a station in support of the Republicans. I can't see where either case makes a right, if there is a law preventing such things.

5. I am an election judge. I have turned people away for wearing a pro candidate shirt.
I do not know the specifics of the conversation in question. I have been "guilty" of engaging in political discussions with my fellow poll workers. As my discussions were about general voter turnout and not pro or con any individual candidate I did not see it as illegal.

My point is that you should have been reticent to ask the question.

2. You are correct. Had you been at any regular voting site during
election day that would have been illegal. We always need to remember that what we get by with this year they can do next year. Laws were made for a purpose.

4. Just want to say
good for you to bring your son along (hope that doesn't come off condescending) - Voting was always a family outing in my house and it's never too young to show how important voting is.
