If Obama is serious about trying to appeal to Evangelicals (although, on what basis I can't really
figure out), then I am completely turning him off.

I understand that he's trying to get some Republicans to vote Democratic, but seeking the Evangelical vote
is anathema to me, as they represent so much of what's wrong with the current state of affairs in this country.
It would also confirm my doubts about his attitude toward the gay community which came to light during
the McClurkin controversy.

I'm trying to get information, not trying to start a bash-fest. If anyone can contribute information in this
regard, I'd really appreciate it.

3. Why would an Evangelical ever vote for a Democrat? On what basis?

Some were really stung by the way Bush treated them once he was elected...
Obama may be thinking of them like Reagan Democrats ~ disenchanted and ripe for the picking.

2. Christians good - non-Christians bad. It is pretty simple.
He talks about his "faith" as though that were some kind of qualification of the office - and to him and his co-religionists, it probably is...

8. I have heard many, many Christians say,
"I just couldn't vote for someone who wasn't a Christian." I know what that means. We either have to have someone who will pander to their superstitions or they will vote for someone - anyone - else, as long as they pander...

13. And they'll vote for Dems because we'll make the changes the "repbs" didn't?
Hmm, there's something wrong with this picture.

4. Well, another ex-gay movement megachurch pastor just gave Obama the nod.

And Obama's used him as a keynote speaker at a "faith" event according to his own website. The guy's name is Kirbyjon Caldwell and he runs Metanoia Ministries.

7. Look -
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 03:02 PM by midlife_mo_Jo
a number of evangelicals are pro-social justice issues (like ending poverty, housing, universal healthcare), and yes, many are "pro-life." They are waking up to the fact that the republican party is not going to change Roe v. Wade, and starting to look at other options. Many of them HATE the war. (Ever see polls on the war? Polls on Bush? Cheney? Some of these people are - gasp - evangelicals.) Most of them are pro-civil union, but against gay marriage.

The tent needs to be big enough to include these people if you want to win the election "and" win enough house and senate seats to affect change. I'm in a very red state, and I can't tell you how many people I know who fit the above description who are supporting Obama or Edwards this year. A couple even support Hillary. :)

Time will work out the gay marriage issue, if the courts don't do it first. I know that doesn't seem fair, but we can accomplish so much with their votes - LIKE ENDING THE DAMN HUMAN LIFE SUCKING, MONEY SUCKING WAR!

The war and healthcare are my top two priorities, so if we can bring them in, I'll be cheering their entrance into the party.

9. For those who think that all evangelicals are rw: read the sojourner
on-line mag. Also many black churches are both liberal and evangelical and have voted Democratic forever. Both MLK and Jesse Jackson are of the Baptist Church, an evangelical church.

10. my best friend was a liberal evangelical christian, and the whole congregation to which she
belonged actually practiced stewardship, care for the less fortunate, all the things we are told that christ preached. when she had one of her cancer surgeries, and when she was dying, her minister called me to offer what comfort she could, even though I am not of that belief system.

and yes, I read sojourner, thanks to my friend--a wonderful publication.

so, no, all evangelicals are not of the huckabee variety.
