Where to post threads about the Democratic primaries. And how to HIDE those threads.
Yesterday we posted a poll asking if members wanted us to limit discussion of the Democratic presidential primaries, and nearly 9 out of 10 respondents voted yes.

Starting now, discussions about the Democratic Presidential Primaries are no longer permitted in the General Discussion forum. Instead, such topics must be posted in the newly-renamed General Discussion: Primaries forum.

Posting threads in the correct forum is simple.

When you click "post" to start a thread in either of the two General Discussion forums, you will be presented with a page explaining that discussion of the Democratic presidential primaries is not permitted in the General Discussion forum, and instead must be posted in the General Discussion: Primaries forum. You will then be prompted to select the forum that is most appropriate for your topic. After you have selected the appropriate forum, post the thread as you normally do.

If you are not sure where to post your thread, then it probably belongs in the General Discussion: Primaries forum.

How to HIDE threads posted in the General Discussion: Primaries forum, so you will not see them on the Latest page.

If you wish to avoid seeing threads from the General Discussion: Primaries forum, you can set your preferences so that they will not appear on the Latest Page. Here's how:

Just click the "Options" icon at the top of any page, and then click "Edit your preferences" to go to the Preferences page. Scroll partway down the page until you see the words "Hide General Discussion: Primaries from the Latest page?" Select "yes," then click the "Update" button at the bottom of the page.

And, of course, if you want to avoid seeing threads about the Democratic presidential primaries, you should avoid entering the General Discussion: Primaries forum.

Thank you for your understanding.

The DU Administrators

A copy of this thread has been pinned to the top of both GD forums. And it has been crossed posted in the other GD forum. Please kick and recommend as necessary so more DUers can see it.

5. I think the cleanest solution would be to limit one new thread per person per 24 hours
in GD-P

Having to 'think' about what you're posting might make a difference.

8. Just enable flood control
How about a full minute and a half or two minutes between each post.

Most of the issues concerning stuff getting bumped off and people starting retaliation threads is a spur of the moment thing. Forcing people to wait a bit between posts and starting threads will allow for a little pause.

Perhaps the responses will be a little smarter as well. It appears a lot of folks throw up knee jerk resonses without spending time to consider the subject matter at hand.

17. Currently it only works on the latest page.
But we are not opposed to expanding it in the future if it becomes necessary.

19. Hi, Skinner. Can I make a suggestion?
Could you, the fine DU administrators, take a harder look at the GD/GDP forums after the election? I suggest this, because I have always been a little confused about the function of each forum. GDP is obviously about politics, while GD has always been in this odd void between the Lounge and GDP. Unless I have something inane, like cat threads, to discuss, I have at times not known whether a few of my thread topics were appropriate for GD, or whether I should keep it to the lounge.

To me, all the political discussion is (aside from the primary of the moment) rather general. Should there always be two separate forums?

Thank you,

~Writer~

20. I'm still steaming over the primary race being dumped onto that page
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 08:42 PM by bigtree
It's a confused mass of posts over here. I won't be joining in. And, I'm a bit shy about posting 'other' news in GD because I can't help reflect on the animosity toward the primary posts (and posters) from most of the folks who said they wanted to reserve GD for all of their 'serious' discussions. Limiting visibility of this primary campaign, at this late point, reduces the impact of this site on those elections. Primary posters have been put down and corralled, by popular demand. I just can't feel good about this.
