I am having a craving
Any of my former Manhattanite neighbors want to trot down to the lower east and pick me up a half dozen half-sweet, half-sours?

5. No, but my local walmart only carries TreeHouse brand
and I can't buy those. They sell pickles to WALMART.

12. Green chile bagels?
:puke: I can't even stand when some (heathen) bagel shops dye the plain ones Green for St. Pat's Day.

When it comes to bagels, I'm a purist; (if I wasn't, I'd have to turn in my Born 'n' bred New Yawker credentials) it's all about Poppy, Onion, or Plain. Sesame if you really must. If you can't get anything else, nothing much wrong with an Everything Bagel, either. No "Cinnamon Toast", Blueberry, or Raisin, tyvm.

15. When you want a real treat, and can afford it, H&H Bagels ships from NYC
Pricey, but overnight shipping IS included. Minimum order is 2 dozen, but they do freeze well; or you could have a brunch party, NYC-style. :D

At a place called "Vinnie's" (duh - what else?) in Deer Park, Long Island, about 50 miles east of Manhattan.

20. Heh, heh, heh ...
I knew that's what you meant!

Thing is we all have our own idea of what 'the good stuff' is, and where it can be found.

My husband swears Chicago pizza is the best, and I say it's New York - but being as I've never had Chicago pizza, and he's never had NY pizza, it's a moot point.

I can tell you this, though: My sister lived in Greenville, SC, for about twenty years, and when she and her husband moved there from NYC, they were both distraught over the lack of good pizza.

They were only there a few months when two guys from Long Island decided to take their NY-pizza-making expertise and move to warmer climes in SC. Within a year of opening their little place, they had expanded it and added two more locations. Once word-of-mouth got around, every displaced New Yorker in the state was lining up at their door.

Now, if only they'd decide to open a place in Toronto ...

Another story: My first husband and I were visiting a friend in Tenafly, NJ - this is like thirty-plus years ago. At about one in the a.m., we were all cravin' pizza, so our host called the only pizza parlour in town that was still delivering at that hour.

It was called "Tenafly Pizza" and -- as he explained -- it was obviously the second of the two pizzerias in town to open, and only called itself by that name because the name "Vinnie's" had already been taken.

8. Dammit, I haven't had a decent half sour since I left Boston
I've tried making them but I just don't have the touch.

You're making me hungry and I resent it.

11. Pssst -- they ship
Seriously -- I used to have them shipped to my mom all the time along with her favorite gerkins.

These are the best kosher pickles outside of Brooklyn.

Call though as their website is still an AOL mysite.
