Zogby Poll: The day after debate Edwards seen closing the gap
Zogby just released a new poll showing Obama leading Clinton 43-24 with John Edwards at 15. This is a three day tracking poll. But for me the significant number is, as Zogby points out, Tuesday, the day after the debate the numbers were:

Obama: 39
Clinton: 22
Edwards: 18

Edwards is in a virtual second point lead with Clinton if margin of error is included. In the three day rolling average Edwards is nine point behind Clinton, but on the day after the debate he closes within four points of Clinton. If Edwards can come in second in SC that will be a big jolt to his campaign and will keep him alive.

She'll stay in the race through Feb. 5 but it will be the beginning of the end.

31. McCain was 3rd in Nevada and he seemed to do fine in South Carolina
Hillary will dominate on Super Tuesday regardless of what happens this Saturday. Obama needs to win to have any shot on Super Tuesday and Edwards would get a bounce from a second in South Carolina. SC means nothing to Hillary now that it is clear she can't beat Obama there.

4. Hi, book_worm. I'd sure like to see John Edwards pull in a good bunch of
delegates in this one.

I think he's got a hell of a lot to offer, and I hope SC voters are in the mood for some serious domestic proposals, because the Edwards campaign shines on that count.

52. I read somewhere recently that if he gets >=15% of the delegates
he actually would have a disproportionate influence at the convention (i.e. king-maker, hopefully not queen-maker, ;) ;) )

6. Let's see if Clinton's strategy of leaving SC for a few days will pay off for Edwards
who is continually stumping SC following his debate win. If he comes in second and Hillary third that would keep him alive and be a blow to her campaign. Tomorrow's numbers will tell if this bump up for Edwards is temporary or the start of a trend.

8. What would really make me happy is if the polls were wrong again...
And John Edwards finished 1st! Now that would make the media's collective heads spin. He's the only one who acted like an adult and presidential last night, so here's to Senator Edwards' success on Saturday!

However, stranger things have happened. Who is to say that people were not extremely turned off by Senators Clinton and Obama last night in the debate. Let's also not ignore what effect that Martin L. King III's letter of encouragement/endorsement will have for Edwards in the South and particularly in the Black community.

Even right-wing media who has no control over Edwards' message...so they'll flood you with "the two' and that will solve the damn pesky progressive ideas and thoughts - None of those thoughts allowed!

20. I'm going to ask this
as a fan of both Clinton AND Edwards. I've donated to both campaigns and am conflicted with this news. I don't want Clinton out of the race, but i DO want Edwards in it. Do you think, HONESTLY, that if Edwards came in 2nd in SC then he would have a reasonable chance of winning the nomination in Feb? do you think he can catapult that far? If he could that would be wonderful as well. Do you think coming in third would HONESTLY put Clinton flat out of the race?

29. No, but it would give Edwards a new lease of life and give him delegates
and a say at the convention--and you never know one of the front runners may be derailed by something by the time of the convention and Edwards would be ready to pick it up.

30. Him winning South Carolina is like Romney winning Nevada
No one wants to say it but it is the truth. On Super Tuesday it will become apparent when neither candidate has a reliable bloc in most states which is giving them overwhelming support that accounts for half the vote.

43. As usual, that's bull...
Romney was the only person running in NV. Bill and Chelsea are campaigning HARD in SC. You and they can spin a loss any way you want but it's not true that it's like Romney winning NV.

Obama's win in SC will give him momentum and his victory speech will be seen by millions of people, including white people, who will be inspired once again by him.

35. Nobody expects Obama to carry the white vote in SC
If he can get 20% running against two white candidates, it's not bad. If he can pull a surprise and close in nearer to Clinton and Edwards, it changes the story line altogether.

41. Watch two very white states North Dakota and South Dakota
both caucus states. In North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad is running the Obama campaign and in SD EX-Sen. Daschle and Sen. Tim Johnson are running Obama efforts--I predict Obama will win both of these lily White states pretty easily and I think they are both on Super Tuesday. Obama on Super Tuesday will also in all liklihood win: Illinois, Alabama, Georgia, Massachusetts (with Kerry's help), Connecticut (with Ned Lamont's machine which defeated Lieberman in '06 in a Dem primary), and I think that with Rasmussen showing it a five-point race currently in CA that Obama has a very good chance there. Another lily white state(s) that I think Obama has a very good chance in are Vermont and Maine.

53. I wouldn't be so sure about Massachusetts
We love John Kerry here, no doubt about it. Having said that, I have already talked to several very involved local politically savvy "leaders" in my area and convinced them both to back Edwards with out a great deal of arm twisting or hand wringing. These are people who are and have been active on the state level for years as well.

I wouldn't count Edwards out here just yet. We have many factories closing here (mostly textile based) and the divide between the haves and have nots is getting more and more evident.

The economy is the focus here ... and overcoming Mitt the Nitwits "health care" mandate that does nothing but make the poor (who can't afford insurance already) pay hefty fines for not getting insurance. Universal care is a focus here, but not the way Willard set it up.

no matter the outcome in SC. First, he is a natural fighter. Second, he knows the cracks have already started in the false M$M facade of Obama, with Rezko, to be a wild card player very soon. If he didn't know before, Hillary made sure he knew after the debate Monday.

He isn't going anywhere, but UP!
