Obama gets caught in a lie on Today show interview
Obama just made such an embarrassment of himself on the Today show.

He was going on and on about how the Clinton camp hasn't been consistent.

So Meredith Viera takes him straight to the video....

That is, the videos of HIM saying two different things about single payer health care.

Then she asked him "where's the consistency."

It was great.

My advice to Obama: don't write a check you can't cash.

80. Meredith got the obviously heavily edited clip from the Clinton camp who prove daily there's nothing
they won't stoop to, to win the nomination. As Hillary said, she's "in it to win it"--obviously at all costs, the truth be damned! They are running a campaign that could have come right out of Karl Rove's playbook.

97. Obama words: Single payer health care plan, universal health care plan, thats what I like to see.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=32maPZg_Ukc

he said the following:

I happen to be a proponent of a single payer universal health care plan. You know the reason why?
United States of America, the wealthiest country in the history of the world, Spending 14 %, 14 % of its gross national product on health care, cannot provide basic health insurance to everybody. And that’s what’s Jims talking about, he says...everybody in, nobody out.
Single payer health care plan, universal health care plan, thats what I like to see.

So the guy hold two slightly different positions on health care over the course of 4 years.

It pales in comparision to Hillary who has been caught holding two different positions on driver licenses for illegals over the course of two minutes.

She's grilled other political figures before. She's a REAL journalist, even if she's on "Today."

Senator Obama's in trouble if he expects to handle the GOP smear machine when he can't handle a "Today" interview.

9. I guess if you can take Obama out of context, it's a "win" for Hilleryworld
Meredith Viera should stick to chessycatting about pumpkin muffin recipes and leave the "journalism" to the adults.

She showed essentially Hillary's lie-laden ad clips and tried to insinuate that Obama never said he was for single payer healthcare.

Here's a word for the college dropout crowd supporting Hillaryworld: Obama would be for Single Payer if it was a fresh start, but knows that getting to Single Payer at this time after Hillary's absolute failure at healthcare reform (and nothing after that) and the powerful healthcare insurance and pharmaceutical lobbies have bought off people like the Clintons, it's going to have to be incremental. It also will not be a good idea to force many families that live paycheck to paycheck to have to then be fined for not being able to pay for forced healthcare insurance.

All this is probably over the head of Hillaryworlders. It's this lack of thinking that makes them believe going backwards in time is "change for the future".

35. ...
She graduated magna cum laude with a degree in English from Tufts University and began her career in 1975 as a news announcer for WORC radio in Worcester, Massachusetts. She began a career in television working as a local reporter and anchor at WJAR-TV Providence, eventually making her way into the newsroom at WCBS-TV in New York City where she was an investigative reporter from 1979 to 1982.

Vieira first gained national recognition as a CBS reporter based in their Chicago bureau from 1982 to 1984. She later became a correspondent for nationwide news-magazine shows including West 57th (1985–89) and 60 Minutes (1989–91). Her final assignment at CBS was as co-anchor of the CBS Morning News (1992–93). She moved to ABC initially as a correspondent for the news-magazine show Turning Point (1993–97). Following the cancellation of Turning Point, Vieira realized:

about calling her a 'child' and deeming her

When Matt's too busy looking in the mirror, they give the interview to Vieira. To think she is a "serious" journalist is like thinking that Hillary is a "leader".

This Rove tactic of attacking peoples strength is never mentioned. It's more a nuanced tool that wouldn't be possible if corporate owned interests would report the news in context and how it relates to any continuing story. The failures of the Rayguns, Bush's and Clinton's are well documented but always ignored

18. Was it taken out of context . . . again?
Obama is in favor of single payer, however he says since we have this God-awful system in place, we have to work to improve what we've got. This is one area where I part ways with Obama, although, and with the exception of Kucinich, I part ways with the other candidates as well. Hillary and Edwards and their mandates are nothing but a giant gift to big insurance. It's amazing, really. If I could afford insurance, I'd buy insurance. It's not like I'm blowing the money on Hawaiian vacations. Now I'm worried the "mandate" will put me on the hook for insurance I can't afford and I'll be fined which will make it even more unaffordable. That's what happened in Massachusetts and the reason many people migrated to southern New Hampshire. "Affordable" to millionaires isn't "affordable" to people who are struggling to buy heating oil. Add to that co-pays, deductibles and uncovered procedures and you're right back where you started from. Kucinich is right on this one.

23. That is not what happened.

I am not supporting any Democratic candidate at this point, as I want to support the nominee.

I appreciate that you may not support Obama but that is not what happened.

I watched Obama on Today, she played the clip. First of all, Obama said he couldn't hear it so he didn't know exactly what was shown.

Second, he did not "lie". He explained his position - which was that he is supportive of a single payer system if we could start from scratch. However, he explained, we cannot start from stratch and so he doesn't support single payer.

I frankly don't know what the older clip was from - whether it was taken out of context or whether it was complete. Neither do you.

I am sick of this Russert "gotcha" quote showing stuff - it is a cheap thrill until it happens to your candidate.

I should add that I actually thought her earlier questions were tougher - suggesting that Hillary had all the female vote and he had all of the black vote -- and did he think it would come to that. I happened to like his response as he said he was competing for every vote, and heard the same concerns from people - black or white - and he was proposing ideas for people - black and white. I also liked that he complimented Hillary Clinton multiple times which I appreciated. He also didn't take her bait on bashing John Edwards. I actually thought he did a pretty good job.

Politics is a dirty game of lying, pandering, inconsistencies, blah, blah, blah. They ALL do it! Hillary is just better at it which will make her the best candidate to run in the general. When our candidate is running against the republican do you want them to be fair and kind and gentle and thoughful...while they are being slimed and swiftboated. We need someone who knows how to fight.

I wish it were different and I'm sure they all do too. Let's get one of ours elected and then focus on changing the system.

38. Well said and welcome to DU. More people...
should consider your point which so many are missing. I'm hoping that Obama shows the stuff needed to prevail in the general election but so far, he hasn't.

Unfortunately, to win today, you must be as tough and aggressive as a pit bull. Hillary has it and Obama doesn't. They'll eat him up in the general election.

I wish he had more years of experience in WDC. Terrible to say, but unfortunately, that's what's required to win.

I'm sure lying and cheating is ok in the GOP, but not here. Sorry you got confused.

Some of us also think health care reform is a very important issue, one that doesn't deserve Obama's lying and obfuscating.

Excerpt:

"Columbia, South Carolina — I went to Barack Obama’s rally here, on Sunday night, with a Republican friend who had never seen the Illinois senator in action before. Watching the crowd of more than 3,000 fill up the convention center, watching the people send up waves of energy to Obama, and watching him play off that energy in a speech that was one of the best political performances anyone has seen this year, my Republican friend said, simply, “Oh, s—t.” He recalled the scene from Jaws, in which the small seaside town’s sheriff realizes how big the shark he’s tracking truly is, and says, “We’re gonna need a bigger boat.” What my friend didn’t have to say was that he was deeply worried that Republicans just don’t have a bigger boat"

South Carolina is the first state in which African Americans, a huge part of the Democratic constituency, will have a chance to vote in big numbers, and they are likely to give Obama his first win since Iowa. After that, who knows? Watching Obama perform at the convention center Sunday night, it’s easy to understand why Bill Clinton is walking around with a look of red-faced frustration these days. Obama represents a mortal threat to his wife’s candidacy, and, given the identity politics that prevail in the Democratic Party, it will be hard to cut his legs out from under him without appearing racist. But there’s no doubt that some Republicans are hoping the Clintons will succeed. Running against the man on stag

79. Viera should answer where she got the video she showed to Obama
This interesting tidbit has come up:

Hillary Clinton's campaign has also struck back at Obama on the honesty issue. It provided TV outlets with video of Obama saying recently that he opposes a single-payer health care system, and a 2003 clip in which he appeared to endorse such a plan.

Obama told NBC's "Today" show Wednesday, "a single-payer system is one that I would support if we were starting from scratch."
