Poll question: Have You Lost Respect For Bill Clinton?
Since he's started campaigning for his wife in the way that he has, have you lost respect for him?

I don't care if he's campaigning for his wife. There's a classier way to do it without smears.

I happen to have this good partnership of 2 strong people who support each other. it makes me happy - and whenever I see it elsewhere - it adds happiness (on DU - my favorite such couple is Sparkly & HusbandtoSparkly :loveya: .
The typical campaign spouse is a smiling puppet. Elisabeth Edwards is another exception to that. I liked her contributions too.

14. My respect for him was mostly based on his speaking skills.
His pro-corporate policies (NAFTA, Welfare Reform, Supporting Media Consolidation) and his bigoted anti-gay discrimination (DOMA, Don't Ask Don't Tell) pretty much turned me off to him. I voted for him in 1996 because the choice between him and Dole was obvious, but I was not happy about it.

You can choose not to answer. And just look at the numbers who have responded in the affirmative.
Maybe you clinton supporters should direct this poll to the campaign. Pretty telling when hard core dems are disgusted by a former democratic president's actions during a campaign.

17. Bill Clinton is the first...
former president whose wife is running for president. This is a totally new situation and new role for a former president. You can't hold him to the same standards of past presidents.

If you are for the candidate who claims to be for change...then you can start by changing your view of how a former president is suppose to behave. Change requires moving forward into the future...not being stuck in the past.

23. I never was a big Bill Clinton supporter
I defended him on the Monica Lewinski affair because I think frankly that his sex life is his own business. But I heard Bill Clinton's interview by Amy Goodman on Democracy Now at about the end of his Presidency. Clinton came off as a complete oaf and an arrogant SOB to Goodman. His temperament can be very ugly. I thought his policies were centrist and maybe even to the right of center on a number of issues. But overall I see Clinton as a much better President than any other Republican in my lifetime except maybe for Eisenhower.

26. I voted earlier but I'll post now.
I'm not one of the flowering over Big Dog people, but by the end of his 2nd term I had come to respect him and appreciate him. That being said, my opinion of him dropped here and there based on certain things, most importantly, his book, which I thought was crap, and brought him down in my eyes. However, I still held him in good regard.

Now, that he's playing the attack dog, and using his position to add more weight to the stuff that spews from his mouth, I don't think I can ever hold him in high regard again. It was bad enough that I could sorta forgive him for Rwanda, and bombing the shit out of the Balkans.

Oh, and thanks to him for sticking up for the Dem party, and fighting for John Kerry, and attacking the Repubs with the same vigor he has recently for his wife, whom he would be backing if she weren't his wife.

And yes, he's directly responsible for the 2000 election. Yes, Gore ran away from him, but Bush ran on Clinton's blowjob, and that's where we're at now.

I can't wait to see another thread about how great, and genius that is the Big Dog from some of the more laughable DUers.

32. I thought he was a creep in 1988
when he gave that long-ass nominating speech for Dukakis at the convention.

His campaign in 1992 did little to dispel that feeling.

His shenanigans while in office (NAFTA, "welfare reform", the Telecom bill, bombing that pharma plant in Sudan) just cemented it.

I haven't respected him in nearly 20 years.

37. What did he do that was truly progressive???
And whether you noticed it or not, we were at war (just ask the Serbs, or perhaps the people of Somalia). Bill Clinton had a Democrat majority for 2 years and did JACK SQUAT.

As for things being so great economically, try asking one of the millions of African-American women and children who were adversely affected by Clinton's Republican-authored "welfare reform".

This site is NOT a home for the VRWC. It is, however, a place that is >50% progressive, so Billy Boy is probably not going to get the same kid glove treatment he gets from the newspapers under his & HRC's thumbs.

Bill lost me when he denied having "sex with that woman". His reply, of course, should have been, "None of your goddamn business!!" Imagine the cheer that would have erupted across the land. "So much for your bogus impeachment, you Repug assholes!". Then, of course, there's the little matter of his failure to promote or enact any progressive programs. In 8 years! If his wife gets the nomination, despite being the weakest Democratic candidate, and manages to win in November, we can expect to see a similar weak-kneed performance from her administration. The Iraq war will drag on for umpteen years. No universal health care. (Can't upset the generous folk from the insurance and pharmaceutical industries.) Keep, or even strengthen the Patriot Act. (Love them powers!) If the Neo-cons have to lose the White House to the Dems, Hillary is their President of choice.

I was drifting into the Michael Moore fringes of the Party until I realized that we had to create a bigger push away from the "third-way" politics of the triangulating 90's that made "liberal" a dirty word.

He betrayed his supporters with his lies. Not just the the masses in this party, but a lot of Democrats that defended him because they believed him. They put their reputation on the line for him.

Then he admits he was lying the whole time he was in the WH, said in his book that he had sex with all these women that had made the accusations.

Sorry, he is trailer trash and I don't believe anything he or his wife says.
