Obama camp asks Baker to investigate calls attacking LewisAssociated Press - January 23, 2008 10:24 AM ET
ATLANTA (AP) - Barack Obama's campaign has asked Georgia's attorney general to investigate anonymous "robocalls" made to Atlanta-area residents taking aim at civil rights hero and Alabama native John Lewis.
The Atlanta congressman and Troy native is supporting Obama's chief rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton. The calls urge listeners to call Lewis and tell him to support a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Lewis called the calls "very disappointing" and said he does NOT believe the Obama campaign is behind them. He implied that the motive might be to divide the black vote.
Obama's camp wasted no time denying responsibility for the automated calls. In an e-mail to supporters yesterday, Obama's Georgia director, Eureka Gilkey, said they had received "disturbing reports" about the calls from Atlanta area residents.
