Edwards Plots Delegate Strategy
As the February 5 primaries approach, ABC News reminds us that battle isn't likely to be over even after 23 states vote that day. "Unlike November's winner-take-all system of electoral votes, Super Tuesday, the Feb. 5 nationwide battle for delegates, is largely proportional and allows multiple candidates within each party to win large swaths of delegates... It is no surprise, given a crowded field and competitive races on both sides that a candidate may not have collected enough delegates to secure the nomination by Feb. 5."

That's a major reason why John Edwards pledges to campaign all the way until the convention. He can still pick up many delegates.

Meanwhile, an aide to Edwards tells The Note that the campaign "is having a high-level meeting on Wednesday to plot Feb. 5 strategy, with targets including California (by far the most delegate-rich state), Oklahoma, Kansas, North Dakota, Missouri, and Tennessee. It’s either pick up enough delegates to play kingmaker, or hope the dynamics change sufficiently for Edwards to get back in the game."

So it's simple for Edwards on February 5th: Hope the dynamics change to get back into the game or gain enough delegates to play kingmaker!

1. I don't think he can pick up enough to win, but kingmaker is a very real possibility.
If Obama or Clinton don't have enough delegates to secure the nomination at the convention, Edwards will be dictating their policy for the next four years.

2. You're right, kingmaker is a real possibility. And an interesting one.

3. What about queen Maker?
Maybe he'll make a deal to become AG. I think he has pissed Obama off to much for that though.

5. The meeting he had with Hillary makes this all too interesting.
Everybody assumed he'd lean Obama's way.

But who knows?

9. I think he's much more aligned with Obama than Hillary re: their positions...
and I also think Hillary TRIED to make some deal with Edwards but I bet and hope he refused.

18. And another thing is, we don't know if Edwards has talked to Obama.
He could know the situation will come where he'll be kingmaker, and is tapping both candidates to talk to them about it. I think you're right, he leans heavily towards Obama over Hillary. It's clear by the way he talks about Obama, and the respect he has for him. Not that he doesn't respect Senator Clinton, but still.

24. Yeah, we DON'T know if he talked to Obama, and I have a feeling that when Hillary
noticed him jumping on Obama a few times during the last debate, she thought maybe she could talk him into supporting HER. I doubt it worked.

7. And the dynamics might change. This has been a wild ride - and only 3 states have voted.
AND Edwards' message needs to be heard. No reason at all for him to get out. Perhaps we should plan another big fundraiser after SC.

4. So wait a minute
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 01:25 PM by SoFlaJet
in other words there is really no hope for him to win the nomination himself, and he knows it right? So our choices are for Edwards to play king-maker and hope he throws OUR support to our second choice, or make our own second choice before voting for him. Well that little meeting he had with Hillary after the last debate makes me very nervous-I'm switching my support over to Obama-just in case...ABH

6. No, he's hoping to pick up enough delegates on the 5th to get back in the game.
And if not, then he wants enough delegates to play kingmaker.

In that case, he has always leaned towards Obama over Hillary. While the Hillary meeting was interesting, and who knows what it meant, we don't know for sure what was talked about or said.

14. Thanks for the reminder of how she threw Kerry under the bus...
she doesn't care WHO she hurts as long as it makes HER look good at the time to those she's trying to appeal to.

10. That "meeting" concerns me, too. I can't imagine what in the world
JE would have to say to HRC - the total antithesis of everything he stands for. I cannot bear the thought that he may be in some sort of collusion with her. And I am also reconsidering my vote on Feb 5th. I wish someone could clear this up. His campaign staffers have to know this rumor is circulating and I really think it should be addressed.

12. For all we know, it could have just been a casual meeting.
And we have no idea what kind of conversations he's had with Obama and his campaign.

If John knows he'll be the king maker, maybe he's addressing both candidates and hearing their case.

15. I know, still can't imagine that HRC would even have a case to make tho. I'd always thought, with
the debate performances where he really teamed up with Obama, that those two would have an easier alliance. We'll see :-) Probably just HRC Camp fanning the flames.

17. Yes, he certainly did. I'm hoping he gets a big bump in SC from that and at least
comes in 2nd. I can see that happening, given HRCs blatant dismissal of the state as a "black vote state". Another 2nd place finish would be HUGE for him going into Super Tuesday !

And who knows?

He's running some effective advertisements there.

He's spending a lot of time and money there.

Playing the native son card.

Great debate performance.

Let's hope he does!! I hope it puts him back in the game. But looking at the poll numbers, it's going to be an uphill climb. Then again I keep remembering how wrong the polls where in New Hampshire when Hillary won. And who knows, Clinton dismissing the state basically could help Edwards. That and the back and forth squabble could help him too.

11. I suggest you quit worrying about Hillary winning and fight for who you really want
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 01:30 PM by Emit
She's gonna get stomped on by Obama in SC and will lose enough delegates to him, so you're safe to stick with Edwards, IMHO. Let's keep him in the race -- he's driving the debate in critical ways and will continue to do so if his voice stays.

It's a primary -- need I say more  ?

Any word on whether Florida delegates will be seated?

20. He can win delegates, but they have no obligation to do his bidding
The delegates assigned to Edwards have absolutely zero responsibility to listen to what Edwards wants. They don't answer to him in any way.

22. The Edwards as a"king maker" meme is ridiculous
After the first ballot he (and the other candidates) have no control over who the delegates vote for.
