Is Edwards too METROSEXUAL to get the nomination??
Just heard a young man on msnbc who has a book out suggesting that Americans choose a president largely on looks ~ he says that Edwards was taken down partly by that YouTube of him fixing his hair, making him seem too metrosexual.

Are Americans really THAT SHALLOW!?!?!?

1. Wasn't there something similar with Kerry 4 years ago?
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 03:40 PM by NYCALIZ
one of the many things GOP liked to criticize about the dem candidate.

I remember something about Kerry and a mirror
and then of course there was Kerry and windsurfing

8. Silly me - I thought it was because the media pretended he didn't exist
And the media's depth of issues is the horserace. No I think Edwards may have been too intelligent for the media so they pushed him away.
This is good because thanks to popular media we may never have to deal with issues again in elections. Focus on the quip and the actions.

9. Ironic that the 'Pukes would even raise that as an issue.
Have they forgotten why Poppy chose Dan Quayle as a VP?

(and no it wasn't just "insurance" against being assassinated)

Danny was picked because he "somewhat resembled" Robert Redford, and was therefore likely to bring in the "women vote".

35. I was thinking that he needed photo ops
involving "manly" activities, as it were. I do sorta think the wimp thing is hurting him, sad to say. If he had been seen shovelling snow or tossing bales of hay that might help his campaign. He has been kinda swiftboated with the "Breck girl" thing and he has not responded the way perhaps his dad would, or I would. At least metaphorically pick up a piece of rebar and say "take that back or you are gonna be picking up your teeth". If he's gonna fight for the working class, he's gotta perhaps show that he can fight like the working class.

That can backfire too, like Kerry's hunting or Dukakis in the tank or Mondale on the USS Nimitz, but he probably oughta do something. Goto New Orleans and haul concrete blocks or do carpentry for a day. Do some physical work like I did last summer after Osawatomie was flooded.

59. No, I loved your answer!
I just think it's amazing that Americans need photo ops like that to prove he's manly enough ~ thus my joke about the silly sitcom bit. No offense.

Actually, as I posted somewhere here, Edwards did have a couple of occasions where he was shown in a different light ~ such as when he announced from New Orleans.

60. okay, sorry
I get bashed around here so much, I get a little too quick to reach for the metaphorical rebar.

It is sad, but it also seems to be something that applies more to John because he is abnormally good looking, which kinda creates some prejudice against him from normal non-good looking people. It's the "have a beer with"/popularity contest aspect of democracy.
