When Hillary said "Slum lord", was she really whispering "Slum"?!?
I was thinking about Norman Hsu just now. That's HIllary's sleazy fundraiser, err, umm, actually she called him her "Hillraiser". Anyway, he's no slumlord that for sure. But he sure is a sleazebag.

Anyway, what is the difference between them? Why is it important that Rezko is a slumlord?

Then I realized the answer.

Perhaps for Hillary, there is no room for slum lords, nor slums.

Perhaps laying out that word "slum" was the important thing.

There are some cynics who might think so. Who might think that candidates choose their words VERY carefully, fully cognizant of the subtext.

Ya think?

Because I enjoy being correct and winning.

Hillary planted that term "slum" upon Obama in that sound bite as surely as the Bonobo is the horniest primate on the planet.

It was intentional.

53. I'm implying
That he needs to be a lot tougher if he's going to win the GE.

Of course it was intentional for Hillary to use slum landlord.

But it's a class statement, just as Obama's calling Hillary a corporate lawyer serving on Walmart was a class statement.

Obama was painting Hillary as someone on the other side of the poverty fence --so Hillary returned fire and painted Obama that way.

Big effing deal.

The REASON, I asked you if you ever lived in a slum is because-- what do you picture when you picture a slumlord?

What do people who live in slums picture?

hint

What do people picture when they picture a Walmart board member?

hint

It was Hillary who did that.

It is unimportant if you call it race or class. The two are intertwined.

Slums = Mostly non-white poor people. So does that make it race or class or both?

You are backtracking because you know I am correct about the subtext being intentional.

To black people, it fosters an image of another rich guy screwing over a poor black neighborhood.

She was trying to sour the SC blacks on supporting Obama by using a racially charged description.

Of course, Hillary doesnt play the race card, thats just a silly rumor started by the Obama campaign and/or the media....

The word was painted on REZKO, and the FRIENDSHIP with him was painted on Obama...if you want to use the "paint" analogy.

41. Race/class, the two are well-mixed enough that they cannot be easily separated.
Many people fear the city, they fear the slums.

Whether it is a white suburban woman or man or an old country black person who is scared by rap or loud "Spanish" music or too many cars or garbage in the streets or whatever.

The "slums" conjure negative imagery.

She painted the word on Obama intentionally.

What the fuck is so hard to understand about that?

I love the pathetic parsing going on here. What, should she have called a guy who charged overpriced rents for horribly maintained apartments that he rented to the least of our brethren a ...what? A Meanie Landlord? Would that make you happy?

40. My first response is to say,
"Hard to say," and then providing an argument for and an argument against. That is because academia teaches you to be an enormous coward. So I'll resist that temptation.

Yes, I think she knew fully its negative connotations (I assume you were talking about connotation/denotation) and, more explicitly, its racial-power-structure connotations. However, I think that her goal stops there. I think she was concerned that Barack's Civil-Rights/Wal-Mart distinction had tarnished her with the image of complicity towards a predatory economic oppressor; she therefore chose to retaliate in kind by tarnishing Obama with the same brush. I think that she might find any other overtones--say, about slums and their inhabitants--welcome, but I think they're something of a fifth wheel when it comes to her goal.

Wow, that's kinda hard to follow.

As such, I'd say that while she was aware of all the word's connotations, she was aiming to use only its "oppressor" image against Obama. She found the rest of the connotations to be acceptable, sure, but since those weren't really part of the narrative she was building, all she was looking for there was that they not in any way undermine her message.

That's my take.

Okay. I think she only meant to use the exact same connotations that were in Barack's Wal-Mart line; the rest were unnecessary and thus probably beside the point. She knew about them, she didn't mean to avoid them, she didn't mean to draw special attention to them.

In the minds of middle class white folks who have not seen slums, the word conjures imagery of dirt, violence, desperation, drugs, all that good stuff.

Race has got nothing to do with it. It's "Classism" riding along with its best friend "Race" that's all.

73. I'll simply reprise your post to Fredda. That's a pathetic way to go out.
You're wrong, you lost the argument, could not refute it, and went out with a loser's reply. Buh-bye indeed.

75. Ok, here's my response to your stupid, personal attack.
From memory, I recall you said something like...

"Who the fuck declared you're the sole arbiter for what white people think anyway!?"

Well, no one. But let me ask you. Is there ANYONE that is the sole arbiter for that? The answer is no. No one could ever make any statement that would cover all people.

So wouldn't that make your stupid personal rant against me, an idiotic straw man?

84. "Stupid" ... "Idiotic" ... more substantive rhetoric from one who is rapidly becoming ...
a flat out caricature of a partisan buffoon. And by the way, I never used the word "sole" arbiter. Your inclusion of the word was designed to buttress a failing argument and was a transparent attempt to place a different nuance to my post. But then, I'll bet you don't do "nuance" any more than you do "logic" or "honesty", do you?

19. Good grief - if you are going to de-construct her comment
try working with the right quote. From my memory she said "slum landlord" - not slumlord.

45. slums - the neighborhood - sex shops - cocaine
Edited on Fri Jan-25-08 05:57 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
Robert Johnson's remark about Obama doing something or other in "the neighborhood" might have well have referred to the "hood" or the "slums" or the ghetto or something similar. The references to Obama's alleged connection with sex shops and with cocaine, slums, and the hood all seem to be trying to portary him with a backdrop of what some idiotic Americans tend to stereotypically associate with any black man: slums, sex, and drugs. It's trying to subtley and carefully craft an image for Obama that he's a blacker-than-black candidate and not a candidate for all Americans as he has tried to portray himself, without being too obvious. In my opinion, it's a conscious and joint effort to build a kind of "Marion Barry" subtext around the name Obama. Hillary could have used the Rezko reference without using the word "slum", but she didn't. She could have referred to any number of "present" votes other than the reference to sex shops but she chose to mention something with "sex" in it.

52. Just like HIS supporters lies upon lies.
This picture for your information was taken at a Carol Mosley-Braum fundraiser and you know how long ago that was. The man's supporter donated $10,000 to CAROL MOSLEY-BRAUM not to the Clintons. And they took pictures with lots of people that day.

But then HIS supporters don't need the truth when they tell so darn many lies. But NBC has been informed. Of course SOMEONE gave that picture to drudge and I just wonder who.

63. Bonobo, this has been the Clinton M.O. since Iowa: "muslim" "drug dealer" "slum" "MLK/LBJ"
The Clintons have taken the Democratic primaries to the lowest low in history all for their ambition.
