Wow Just finished my first time Phone Banking for Edwards
On one of my calls I spoke to a "Reagan Democrat". He said he was going to sit this election out. He used all the repug terms and misinformation to describe all three candidates. We had a lot in more in common than most of you would think(except the Reagan supporting)...He is retired pro union and about my age. After a little light hearted sparring regarding what Reagan really did for the working class and unions. We spoke on the issues and he agreed things needed to change. To sum it up he agreed to visit Edwards site and read up on where he stands on the issues. He also said maybe he should re-think his stance on not voting. My point is there are many "conservative democrats" who are really liberals at heart. We just need to let them know how much we have in common. We do that by discussing not yelling and mudslinging.

1. Good work.
It's my true belief that a LOT of conservatives would be drawn to Johnny's economic populism should they simply be informed about it.

11. I have considered it, but I don't have a southern accent and was afraid that would
turn people there off.

What do you think?

17. My problem would be that if I spend a good part of a day
talking to Southerners, I'd end up with a version of the accent myself. It's happened in the past. I just can't help it. I've had it happen with other accents, Irish, for example, but some southern accents seem to come naturally to me.

It's weird.

2. I salute you for a great job.
It usually pays to keep your cool and to try to stay on the candidate's script for the most part. Sounds like you did.

13. I did that for Clark in 2004
It takes a lot of resolve to sit at home and keep dialing up strangers without group support around you. I applaud your committment.

15. stay calm
I almost got upset when he called Edwards a sleazy lawyer. But I let him vent(cause living in Georgia I get that comment a lot} than I started asking questions that gave me a background of who he was. When I asked who he would like to see run and he said Reagan, I didn't write him off. I have dealt with mis-informed "Reagan Democrats" and believe it or not a lot of them are union. Most joined a union after the 70's and don't really know the history of the labor movement.

I will be positive and keep my cool. Lame would be surprised with how I reacted(I'm pretty "passionate" when I believe in someone) to him calling Edwards name. But I have seen how Edwards handles such attacks and if he can take it with a smile than so can I.

24. conservative Democrats who bought into Reagan's lies.....
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 04:21 PM by unapatriciated
during his campaign for president, he blamed social programs and unions for the recession. If you lived in California when he was Governor you would understand it more. During his Governorship he coined the phrase "Welfare Queen" based on a story he told over and over again, where he blew up the facts to fit is political purpose and continued to tell the same story even after the press pointed out the lie. But middle america needed someone to blame and it was easier to blame the poor than their corporate bosses for a stagnant post war economy.

25. I am a native Californian and so I did live there while he was Gov.
I also did have the unfortunate opportunity to have had bu$h as Gov. I remember how Reagan screw up California. And how he went on to screw up American as did bu$h. And I still don't get "Reagan Democrats".
