EXIT POLL: HALF OF VOTERS SAID BILL CLINTON CAMPAIGNING WAS VERY IMPORTANT IN THEIR CHOICE
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5gOW83yaVQ5F284fIP5pDfXWvJGDgD8UDR5600

Interviews with voters as they left their polling places indicated about half the electorate was black.

Half the voters said the economy was the most important issue in the race. About one quarter picked health care. And only one in five said it was the war in Iraq, underscoring the extent to which the once-dominant issue has faded in the face of financial concerns.

Roughly half the voters said former President Clinton's campaigning for his wife was very important to their choice.

The exit poll was conducted by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International for The Associated Press and the networks.

9. Remember Clinton-era Welfare Reform?
Many people were kicked off the Medicaid/TANF/Food Stamps rolls during the Clinton era.

It may not be a good thing that he was considered in their choice.

28. Many people in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, the Carolinas...
and other southern states are deeply affected by poverty. It's not an assumption. It's a fact.

our primary. I read Dorchester county - Republican - has a higher turnout this week than last.

Bill Clinton has made me
take a much closer look at Obama. I vote on February 5th and until recently I was solidly for Edwards. I voted for Bill Clinton, once, and while I never regretted that vote I never really liked him.

I still like Edwards but I want the Clintons to go away so badly I may switch to Obama.

So, in a sense, Bill Clinton's campaigning for his wife has become very important to my choice too.

14. Bill Clinton might have blown it with black voters.
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 05:54 PM by dkf
The black vote might be very significant after all in that it could signal a change in how Black America views the Clintons. If Blacks stay home in the General, Dems are screwed.

18. But they didn't stay home.
However, I appreciate the unveiled threat. Is this a sample of how Obama plans to govern? By manipulating the black population to boycott (or riot) on request? Does he HAVE that much power? How would he obtain it without a blatant appeal to race?

But continue to plot and plan...while you wait to see if Obama can get more than single digits from the white voters his campaign has so carefully segregated.

24. He said in the general election
And what is this about "manipulating" and "or riot"?

And it isn't even so much about Obama. Browsing black blogs shows a growing disgust with a Clinton campaign. There are many who say they will write in a candidate, not vote Dem for president, or stay home if Hillary is the nominee. They aren't saying the same thing about Edwards.

Don't turn it into "Obama or else" because it isn't. It's more like "Anyone but Hillary."

32. Black voters don't sit out elections over grudges. They understand being played for pawns.
Whoever the nominee is will get a huge number and percentage of black voters.

15. Yes, but mostly to The Negative: Bill Clinton attempted to dredge up the ghost of Lee Atwater ...
His Clintonian DLC sorely underestimate the INSIGHT of the American Electorate, even those "good ole boys" down south and their "dark skinned" neighbors KNOW Southern Strategy *code* when they hear it.

I've lost all respect for Bill Clinton. He's devolved into a grasping, clingy shell of the once "somewhat honorable" man he was as President.

More and more within The Democratic Party would like the "Big Dawg" to STFU already.

of the Southern Strategy of "divide and conquer" via racism.

Bill Clinton's red faced ANGRY tirades and direct attacks on Obama were shameless and his (and HRC's) use of terminology was, to say the least ... suspect - all in an effort to "tangentially" fire-up whites who may be consciously or unconsciously racist. Bill Clinton's behavior in The South has been deplorable and The American People are NOW waking up to his charade.

On Edit: I know extremism as an immediate member of my family was formally asked to join "The Birch Society" when I was a young girl. BUT damned if I did not continue to *despise* that "states rights" and "anti-goverment" bat shit crazy blather. Hillary did embrace Goldwater Conservatism and later was elected to The Presidency of her Young Republican college organization. There's your great example of a DLC Democrat in action.
